In the financial year, the company organised the Hand in Hand Festival 2024 in Bristol, the largest LGBTQ+ choral festival to date, welcoming over 1,400 singers from 45 choirs across the UK and Ireland. The event promoted community cohesion, inclusion, and LGBTQ+ visibility through music and celebration. It featured 69 performances, social events, and workshops, and introduced innovations such as tiered pricing, bursaries, and a Pay-it-Forward scheme to ensure financial accessibility. The festival also launched a Scratch Choir to engage new singers and supported their continued participation in local LGBTQ+ choirs. The event significantly benefited the LGBTQ+ community by fostering connection, joy, and artistic expression in a safe, inclusive environment. The impact of our work included: -Increased visibility and representation of LGBTQ+ voices through public performances and events. -Enhanced community cohesion by bringing together diverse choirs and individuals in a shared celebration. -Improved accessibility through tiered pricing, bursaries, and a Pay-it-Forward scheme, enabling participation regardless of financial means. -Support for new singers via the creation of a Scratch Choir, encouraging ongoing engagement in local LGBTQ+ choirs. -Focus on inclusion and accessibility, with dedicated support for disabled, neurodiverse, and underrepresented participants. The Hand in Hand Festival CIC entered into a partnership arrangement with Bristol Beacon, Bristol’s biggest performance venue. Our partnership enabled us and the Beacon to welcome and engage with the LGBTQ+ community – a key part of their mission statement to widen their provision and engagement with ‘hard to reach’ sections of the community. The festival also contributed to the local economy and cultural life of Bristol, while laying the groundwork for future festivals, ensuring long-term community impact. A Bristol festival report is published online: www.handinhandfestival.org
Consultation with stakeholders was an ongoing process throughout the planning and delivery of the Hand in Hand Festival. Feedback from previous Hand in Hand Festivals was used to inform the initial planning stages of the Bristol Hand in Hand Festival. Festival participant feedback is very important as those who have attended previously give us valuable insights as to how they experienced the festival and how it met their needs. We know that many participants are frequent returners to the Hand in Hand Festival and therefore we regard them as stakeholders. An Advisory Group made up of members from across the LGBTQ+ community provided guidance during the planning stages, particularly around inclusion and accessibility. The company also appointed an Inclusion Coordinator and team to liaise directly with attendees needing additional support, ensuring that stakeholder voices were central to the festival’s design and delivery. Regular live video sessions were held for both Choir Leaders and Singers throughout the planning process, which enabled the CIC to pass on news regarding latest developments, but also offer the opportunity for participants to ask questions, or voice any concerns. Throughout and after the Bristol festival, feedback was collected from the 1,400 Singers and Choir Leaders/Organisers and is being used to inform the planning of the next festival in Blackpool in 2027.
Project Team members received a total of £26,000 remuneration (in the form of one-off payments) for their contribution over the three years up to the Hand in Hand Festival, Bristol 2024. This total included £18,000 as reimbursement for governance duties to company directors and £8,000 compensation for contribution to other project team members.
