COMMUNITY INTEREST ANNUAL REPORT

BETTER NATURE ECOTHERAPY CIC

Company Number: 15248320 (England and Wales)

Year Ending: 31 October 2024

Company activities and impact

We are a not for profit community interest company established to offer affordable and accessible nature based therapeutic services. Our work harnesses the evidenced practices of Nature Connection, Mindfulness and applied Eco-psychology to bring a spectrum of interventions which support the mental and emotional needs of people in the community. We work with people of all ages and backgrounds with a variety of identified mental health needs ranging from low level emotional and psychological needs, to mild to moderate diagnosed mental health needs as well as people with complex and enduring mental health conditions. We also work in partnership with land based, regeneration projects and other green social prescribing organisations. FUNDED ACTIVITIES THIS YEAR Better Through Nature This is our pilot program in partnership with Frome Medical Practice and Natural Academy. A six-week course for people with anxiety, depression or burnout. This program is rooted in research that shows getting connected to nature can improve your mental and physical health. Over the six weeks we offer you skills for getting in touch with nature to help cope with life's ups and downs so that you will be more resourced going forward. This pilot meets our vision and aims in servicing the community and expanding nature connectedness for mental wellbeing. While for our partners at FMP and NA there is a larger focus on how to upscale nature based early interventions for mild to moderate mental health concerns. The practice will be creating a toolkit to guide other GP practices in integrating this work to promote sustainable and ecologically allied practices into primary care. Phase one of this project saw BNE deliver the first course. We had 12 people sign up for the course which took place in the orchard in the showfield behind the medical practice. Phase one was made possible by some generous donations from private philanthropy and our supporters at Be the Earth foundation. We are delighted with the outcomes of this pilot course and the inroads we have made with Frome Medical Practice to make nature-allied, sustainable health care a reality. TRADED ACTIVITIES Affordable Retreat Days We ran two successful affordable retreat days, in March and later in June servicing 27 people. These retreat days took place at East Woodlands village Hall and St Mary’s Church in Frome. They involve a combination of guided meditation and nature based practices to deepen nature connectedness and mindfulness for wellbeing. Workshops In June we were invited to run a workshop for Future Shed in Frome inviting people to an experiential session of nature connectedness exploring how metaphors and our relationship with the natural world and ourselves can support us through uncertain times. We did this at The Warren in Wanstrow. The session was well attended with some excellent feedback from participants. Community Impact Our services reached approximately 62 people in our first year. Better through Nature pilot program feedback and impact: All participants showed an average 40percent improvement across the Warwick Edinburgh Wellbeing Index and the Natural Academy Flower Wheel scores. There was a 71percent improvement to managing problems and a 65percent improvement to community belonging. Data reported a 60percent improvement to mood and people felt 69percent more relaxed in themselves as a result of the program. Looking ahead, we have secured funding from the Medlock Foundation and Lottery Community Fund to deliver phase 2 of Better Through Nature in Spring to Summer of 2025. With this funding, three more courses will be delivered, servicing up to 36 people. In 2024 to 2025 we will be running monthly nature connection sessions which have been jointly funded by Frome Town Council and the Lottery’s Awards for All grant.

Consultation with stakeholders

Our stakeholders are Frome Medical Practice and the patients that they see. As part of this collaboration, we have trained GPs and Health Connectors in the benefits of nature connection and how to identify patient needs that would be suitable for our program. Frome Medical Practice has identified a need for alternative ‘nature prescriptions’ in order to meet their targets for more ecologically sustainable medical interventions. They hope that our program will help reduce the number of anti-depressant medication that is prescribed which is known to have an adverse environmental impact on our water systems. Further consultation is in place to discuss the upscale of this model to other GP practices in the local Mendip area and we are in the process of creating a toolkit for GP practices to replicate the model that we are piloting. Further stakeholders include other green social prescribing services in our local area. We have been collaborating with 12 other local organisations to discuss how to improve access and address barriers to inclusion for the Frome community. We are also collaborating by inviting representatives from 4-5 GSPs to visit our Better Through Nature groups to talk about their services as a way to address barriers to accessing new services. This has been well received and we will continue to include this collaboration in our program.
