COMMUNITY INTEREST ANNUAL REPORT

GREEN CONNECTIONS C.I.C.

Company Number: 12440585 (England and Wales)

Year Ending: 28 February 2025

Company activities and impact

The company continues to offer a range of nature based activities for community and individual wellbeing across the areas of Hertsmere and Watford and increasingly across a wider area of Hertsmere and South East England. We have continued to engage the views and input of a stable group of local resident volunteers who contribute their time and expertise in different ways. We have worked in partnership with a partner arts organization BEEE Creative CIO, to create a fusion program of nature based wellbeing activities during 2024/2025. We have together utilized public funding to Improve mental and physical health and wellbeing to the following target groups: underserved, economically deprived communities in Watford Our rolling contract with a care home provider (TLC Care) is our main source of trading income which sees us designing and providing nature themed activity boxes to care and nursing home residents in Hertsmere, Watford and other surrounding locations Sessions and activities are designed by executive director and occupational therapist but delivered by lead practitioners including activity coordinators in care/nursing homes and those who are trained to teach art and dance These have included: Seasonal workshops in parks and recreational spaces using the principles of therapeutic horticulture, dance and visual arts (funded by the Mayor of Watford). We have also secured ongoing funding from Tesco and Coop community funds respectively, which we are planning to put towards providing intergenerational nature based activity boxes to socially isolated community dwelling older adults. A total of £1000 in restricted funding was awarded to Green Connections (via Groundwork Ltd managing Tesco Community Fund) in the past financial year, with a remaining amount of restricted funding being carried forward from the last financial year. Our boxes continue to make a difference to the lives of 6 different groups of stakeholders: Care home residents Residents who more socially withdrawn or unable for other reasons to take part in group ac-tivities, are given time where they have meaningful one to one interaction at a level that’s comfortable with them. Care home activity coordinators and other care home staff The activities contained in the boxes open up opportunities for activities coordinators to get to know their residents in a different way and learn things about them which they otherwise wouldn’t know e.g. what their favourite flower is; favourite memories of a garden. This helps build a strong therapeutic rapport, making their job more pleasurable and fulfilling. Care Home Residents’ Relatives and visitors Our gentle activities enable the relationship between relative and resident to evolve in a new way, creating new memories together. Care home managers All of the activities create exciting opportunities for inter generational projects which are suited to young people or families in the area. They generate ideas to care home managers wanting to extend their links with local communities. Box contributors Through an established arrangement with West Herts College and Watford Sheltered Workshop, students with learning disabilities are given vocational skills and volunteering opportunities when they assist with assembling and packing the boxes. Those who contribute crocheted gifts and handwritten postcards to our boxes are given a sense of fulfilment and satisfaction of doing something which makes a difference and showing kindness to a stranger. Partnering with local organisations (e.g. The Bee Friendly Trust, Rennie Grove Peace Hospice, Herts & Middlesex Wildlife Trust, RSPB and Nordic Walking Watford) raises awareness of their respective work and missions, ultimately bringing benefits and positive change to people, neighbourhoods and the natural environment. In addition we are now able to list the following additional groups as beneficiaries: Arts for wellbeing practitioners Our consultant occupational therapist plans, supervises and enables continues learning opportunities for local artists who lead our nature based creative arts sessions. Hospice service users and staff We have started the planning phase of a project which will be delivered in partnership with a local large Hospice provider. We will deliver face to face nature based creative arts sessions and activity boxes to hospice in patients, outpatients and those attending bereavement support groups. We are also offering continuous professional development opportunities to hospice staff who are supporting us to deliver these sessions.

Consultation with stakeholders

The company’s stakeholders are Charitable and voluntary sector organisations in Hertsmere, Watford and the wider area of Hertfordshire Care home staff, residents and visitors hospice service users, patients, staff and relatives/carers Local residents who are interested in engaging in nature themed activities which promote social inclusion and reduce loneliness. We continue to reflect and change our service delivery in the following ways: Visiting care homes and attending wellbeing forums to speak with staff, residents and visitors about what would enhance care and what’s missing for them at the moment. We regularly attend local wellbeing board meetings. Suggestions and ideas are then incorporated into the content of our Green Care and Connections boxes. We continue to collect and analyse feedback from participants after sessions.
