Established in 2019, Bwyd Da Mon tackles food poverty, reduces food waste, and promotes healthy eating by rescuing surplus food from supermarkets and partnering with Fareshare. This initiative has diverted 103,608 kg of food from landfill, providing approximately 249,248meals to families in need. Operating a pantry shop days Four days a week, in addition to an average of 50 families weekly for 12 weeks, referred by organizations supporting vulnerable populations such as those affected by domestic abuse, financial hardship, mental health, refugees, and young families facing challenges
Our impact extends through partnerships with Anglesey County Council, Medrwn Mon, Menter Mon, Digartref Cyf, Mencap Mon, Age Cymru, and CAB, enabling us to leverage resources and expand our reach. Members contribute £6 weekly for access to a package including one meat item, one dairy item, eleven pantry and fresh items combined, one drink, and one snack, either delivered or collected. We collaborate closely with the local authority's financial inclusion team and plan to expand services, with a focus on food education for children and young people. We currently have 150 members. We also provide a free service where we receive referrals from 3rd sector agencies and the local authority. On average we support 50 families per week for up to 12 weeks. The 3rd Sector and the Local authority as stakeholders find the service invaluable as a short term support mechanism of food parcels for 12 weeks, making a difference to peoples lives.
