LIVING COMMUNITIES CIC

Directors' report period ended 30 September 2024

The directors present their report with the financial statements of the company for the period ended 30 September 2024

Principal activities of the company

Living Communities CIC is currently micro with big ambitions. Our strapline is Connecting Communities With Creativity And Nature. All of the directors have a wealth of experience of working within the community as creatives and this will begin to shine through the older Living Communities CIC becomes. We are based in Bexhill and currently operate in Bexhill and neighbours and Tooting, South London and neighbours. It started slowly as we looked for funding and began to plan our first year of operation. We quickly lost Jamie Burns, one of our founding directors who resigned due to growing family commitments, it was a shock but family comes first and it was understandable. Uwazimife Adaba, Gemma Lloyd and Jennifer Walker-Lawes the remaining directors continue and balance the work between Bexhill and Tooting. We are focused on creating more opportunities for our local communities. We have recently been joined by two further directors which we believe will expand our operations through their connections and ambitions. Harper Fairbrass and Naomi Holdbrook. We meet regularly and online to discuss our projects and ambitions for future projects and we work transparently so that everyone is aware what everyone else is working on within the CIC. We have a robust safeguarding policy and more than two thirds of the directors and associate artists we work with are neurodivergent and we are very aware not to discriminate and have robust proceedures in place. It's a supportive and creative environment and we hope to enable and empower much of our local community as we continue to expand. We are currently planning larger projects which will require larger funding, we are also hoping to collaborate with other organisations and we are currently looking for a space to call home so we can run workshops on a regular basis to generate an income so we can keep offering the community projects to everyone free of charge. For our first year, although we weren't always sucessful with our funding bids, in the current climate we're grateful for anything that comes our way. And we believe we have created firm foundations to now really push forwards.

Company activities and impact

Living Communities CIC was founded in September 2023 and we spent the next months planning, designing and really understanding the needs of our local community and the best way we were going to approach our work with them. Funding is currently extremely competitive, you're lucky if you win 1 in 5 grants currently so we applied for more than we won. We are looking into creative ways to generate more funds that aren't reliant on grants. Our first project in March 24 was a focus on greening up Tooting, South London. The area is very urban and has dangerous high levels of pollution. We were awarded a grant via Hubbub to create a Living Wall in an alleyway within Tooting. We collaborated with Share Community, a charity that works with adults with disabilities. The work is still on-going, the first phase was creating the wall and this is now complete. The biodiversity in the area has improved and we will be testing the air quality for positive changes. It's open to all and is the first public living wall in Tooting. 20 adults from Share Community benefited from being trained in horticulture. The general public, in their hundreds will be able to reflect and relax in front of the Living Wall. In June 24 we were awarded funding by Rother District Council to run a Big Lunch in collaboration with Eden Project Communities and a local cafe for the residents of London Road, Bexhill. A story for your lunch, if people told us a story about London Road they got a free lunch. It benefited 60 residents in Bexhilll who enagaged in a positive, social and creative day as well as the cafe who were funded to cook and provide the food for the lunch. In July 24 we were awarded funding by Chalk Cliff Trust for days out for young neurodivergent young people in East Sussex. The first day was at a local farm in Robertsbridge, we worked alongside the farm owners and their rescue horses to create a magical, creative, theraputic day for the young people, many who feel isolated and unheard. The second day was a creative day in Hastings Art Gallery and Museum, we were shown around an exhibition by the curator and then we took part in an art response. Both days were extremely beneficial to the participants, not only in their confidence, but in their creativity as well as giving them the opportunity to meet people of their own age. 12 young people plus their carers/parents were given days out of their norm, to stimulate creativity and to connect with therapy horses that are trained to support people that struggle with the 'norm', 12 young people plus their carers/parents had a creative, positive day in an space that most had not visited before. Overall considering we had limited funding for our first year we offered varied and positive projects to the communities of Tooting and Bexhill.
