COMMUNITY INTEREST ANNUAL REPORT

CREATING CONVERSATIONS CIC

Company Number: 14464910 (England and Wales)

Year Ending: 30 November 2024

Company activities and impact

Creating Conversations CIC was formed in November 2022 to create opportunities for people to get together to talk openly about death, dying and grief. Originally our work focused on the London Boroughs of Waltham Forest and Redbridge but since August 2024 we have also been delivering activities in the City of Glasgow. In the financial year 2023 – 2024, Creating Conversations has benefited the community in the following ways: Delivered 36 events which included: 14 Death Cafes 15 Grief Cafes 3 Understanding Grief Awareness Raising Talks 4 Community events (e.g. other talks, workshops, picnics) Made contact with 54 community organisations in London Boroughs of Waltham Forest and Redbridge and 50 community organisations in Glasgow to ensure that the local community is aware of the opportunities. Trained 5 volunteers with lived experience as event table hosts Engaged with 687 individuals raising awareness of opportunities to talk about death, dying and grief (numbers booked to attend our events) Provided opportunities for 463 individuals to engage with conversations about death, dying and grief (numbers attended our events). Provided aftercare to event attendees through sharing of information and signposting to other resources and responding to individual emails.

Consultation with stakeholders

Creating Conversations CIC’s stakeholders are (1) the residents of the London Boroughs of Waltham Forest and Redbridge and Health & Social Care Practitioners working in these boroughs and (2) the residents of Glasgow. Consultation has taken two formats. 1. Consulting with local stakekholders We regularly attend local voluntary sector and NHS network meetings to raise awareness of what we offer and seek views about activities that will be helpful to their service users. We also arrange one-to-one meetings with key stakeholders we wish to engage with e.g. social prescribers and local library services (who we are increasingly partnering with). From this we learnt that: People particularly want and need information and support around end of life care planning; particularly around recording their end of life wishes (advance care planning), funeral planning and writing a Will There is a lack of grief support available in all localities that we work in and practitioners often don’t know where to refer/signpost their service users. 2. We seek feedback from everyone who attends our events. We ask all individuals who participate in Creating Conversations CIC’s activities to complete feedback forms which request their thoughts on developing and improving our activities. From this we learned that: Attendees find our event spaces safe, welcoming, inclusive and comforting; People really appreciate having a safe and non-judgemental space where they can go to talk openly about death, dying and grief and their feelings around these topics; Our events provide a space for people to connect with each other and they help build a support network. This helps reduce feelings of isolation and loneliness; People value hearing other people’s experiences and sharing helpful strategies for coping with difficult feelings and navigating their grief; There is a need for more support around grief and loss, and specifically Grief Cafes and Grief Walks. People have also requested more arts and creative activities to help navigate the grieving process.
