Happy Smiles Training CIC is a multi-award-winning, disabled people-led social enterprise, with over 90% of our team made up of disabled people in 2023–24. We work to create more inclusive communities by delivering high-impact, lived experience-led training, peer mentoring and community engagement – empowering disabled people to lead the conversations that affect them. This year, we were honoured to receive national recognition for our work from both the King’s Award for Voluntary Service and National Diversity Award for Disability. We also into a new, fully accessible office space to support the wellbeing, engagement and professional growth of our team. Key highlights for the 2023–24 period include: 109 training sessions delivered across Greater Manchester, Merseyside, Lancashire and Cheshire, reaching a total of 5,631 beneficiaries including schools, businesses, councils and NHS teams. 61 weekly 'Realise Your Potential' sessions provided holistic, person-centred wellbeing and employment readiness support to 22 disabled volunteers, all of whom received regular safeguarding, mentoring and upskilling guidance through our wraparound model. 52 ‘Fempowered Together’ sessions facilitated peer-led empowerment spaces for 26 disabled women and non-binary people, tackling isolation, building confidence and developing community leadership. 27 community events supported or led, including Wigan Pride, the Big Help Out, Access Matters GM, and National Inclusion Week, engaging over 1,000 members of the public in positive conversations around disability. 7 strategic partnerships developed, including with The National Lottery Reaching Communities Fund, Salford City Council, Manchester United Foundation, GMCA, Everything Human Rights, and NHS GM. 4 commissioned projects completed, co-designed with disabled people to embed inclusive practices across local services and organisations. VR training pilot launched – “A Day in Our Shoes” – a pioneering immersive training experience exploring barriers faced by disabled people, developed with our team of lived experience-led trainers. 2 national features on BBC and ITV News highlighting our work in disability representation, peer leadership and children’s education. 1 new accessible HQ established, improving co-production, team connection and accessibility for disabled staff, volunteers and visitors. 1,000+ children reached through our inclusive children’s books and author-led school sessions – educating families about disability, health conditions and diverse representation. Total beneficiaries supported: 6,631 All activities were delivered by disabled trainers, peer mentors and volunteers with lived experience, backed by bespoke weekly wraparound support – ensuring safeguarding, wellbeing and progression needs were met in a way that was truly person-centred.
