Company activities and impact

From October 2023, we have worked on providing support for emerging artists in their professional development. To do so, we have started to create an online library containing videos and online resources that are free to access and available to all. We wanted to bridge the knowledge gap for emerging artists coming from diverse backgrounds who might not know how to navigate the industry. We have also created ‘Next Take’ - a short film series but also a development project for emerging actors. We acknowledge it can be difficult to navigate the industry and that it can be even harder to get to experiment with roles so we created ‘Next Take’. It is a short film where a chosen actor is doing a self tape for an audition. The script is developed with the chosen actor. The goal is to let them experiment with a genre or a role they have not had at this point. It is also to allow actors to break from the bias that still exists in the industry and showcase them in the way they want to be seen. We have also included some headshot services - free of charge and mentoring so the emerging actor can walk away with some material for their showreel and with some industry standard headshots. The first episode came out mid 2024. We have also mentored new writers to help them develop plays with the intent of putting them on. From October 2023 to October 2024, we especially focused on Laura Walker who was working on a future Fringe Show. One of our directors, Fin Ross Russell, spent some time helping them not only with the development of the play but also with the logistical aspects of the Fringe. At the time, we also mentored Emery Schafer, another young emerging writer, who was keen to bring her play to the Fringe. We helped with navigating them through the requirements of a Fringe show and supported them through their funding applications. For Island Life Productions, this year was about accessible information to all emerging artists, no matter their location, while also providing local Edinburgh-based emerging artists with bespoke support so they could build sustainable creative careers.
