In the space provided below, please insert a general account of the company’s activities in the financial year to which the report relates, including a description of how they have benefited the community. Activities -During the year Sgiliau CBC have continued delivering the Thriving Minds project funded by UK Youth providing wellbeing activities and general support to young people aged 11 to 16 to address challenges of mental health. -Sessions include art and music therapy, horticulture and wellbeing walks. -During the summer holidays from school we supported young people who have disengaged from mainstream statutory schooling providing weekly workshops and fun activities to keep them engaged over the long 6 week summer break. The long summer break often leads to re-engagement in education in September when the holiday ends. Our pilot saw much more positive results in the pupils returning to alternative education programmes in September as they maintained contact with other pupils and their teachers during the summer. -In addition, we provided a series of creative workshops for young people via 8 evening sessions funded by Caerphilly County Borough Council Youth Service. This has helped fill the gap in local youth provision since the closure of the Council’s Youth Centre. Impact and Community Benefits - 38 young people were supported over the year in Risca and Brynmawr via the Thriving Minds project. - 12 young people were supported by the creative workshops funding provided by CCBC Youth Service. -Providing much needed support to engage young people in Risca and Brynmawr to help them overcome isolation and general wellbeing needs. -The positive environment providing interactive practical activities and socialisation have improved the general wellbeing of the young people we have engaged. -The longer-term impact of providing this support should improve the general wellbeing felt by the young people engaged. -The summer programme for school age pupils reduced returning to education issues in September such as; disengagement, having to re-learn educational gains in previous academic year including basic English and mathematical learning, behavioural issues, reluctance to engage in learning activities. The impact was very positive overall and the transition to their next academic year was far easier as a result of the summer programme and allowed them to make more progress over the academic year by preventing the need for remedial work.
We have worked closely with numerous stakeholders over the past 12 months to improve and develop provision. Stakeholders we have engaged with include: - UK Youth and the 100+ partner organisations we work collaboratively with delivering the Thriving Minds Project e.g., Circus Skills in Swansea helped us to identify circus skills as a way to help young people develop new skills and also improve their wellbeing through practising a circus skill e.g., juggling. Also, we explored the concept of a Forest School with another partner that has generated new ideas to improve young people’s wellbeing. This has encouraged us to get involved in the Egin environmental project (in Wales). - Growing Space also Learn & Grow CIC have worked with us to develop horticultural ideas that we will incorporate into the Egin project. - Caerphilly CBC’s Youth Service – we worked with them to develop creative workshop ideas to engage young people in Risca. - Young People - our ‘Young People’s Voice’ provides us with valuable information and insight into their needs and wants that help us develop appropriate responses as well as feedback where we can improve and develop better provision and support for the young people we work with.
