Notes to the Financial Statements

for the Period Ended 30 November 2024

  • 1. Accounting policies

    Basis of measurement and preparation

These financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the provisions of Section 1A (Small Entities) of Financial Reporting Standard 102

    Turnover policy

2.2. Turnover Turnover is measured at the fair value of the consideration received or receivable, net of discounts and value added taxes. Turnover includes revenue earned from the sale of goods and from the rendering of services. Turnover is reduced for estimated customer returns, rebates and other similar allowances. Sale of goods Turnover from the sale of goods is recognised when the significant risks and rewards of ownership of the goods has transferred to the buyer. This is usually at the point that the customer has signed for the delivery of the goods. Rendering of services Turnover from the rendering of services is recognised by reference to the stage of completion of the contract. The stage of completion of a contract is measured by comparing the costs incurred for work performed to date to the total estimated contract costs. Turnover is only recognised to the extent of recoverable expenses when the outcome of a contract cannot be estimated reliably.

    Tangible fixed assets depreciation policy

2.3. Tangible Fixed Assets and Depreciation Tangible fixed assets are measured at cost less accumulated depreciation and any accumulated impairment losses. Depreciation is provided at rates calculated to write off the cost of the fixed assets, less their estimated residual value, over their expected useful lives on the following bases: Plant & Machinery - SL over UL, Computer Equipment - SL over UL

    Other accounting policies

2.1. Basis of Preparation of Financial Statements The financial statements have been prepared under the historical cost convention and in accordance with Financial Reporting Standard 102 section 1A Small Entities "The Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland" and the Companies Act 2006.

COMMUNITY INTEREST ANNUAL REPORT

SITOPIA FARM CIC

Company Number: 13000845 (England and Wales)

Year Ending: 30 November 2024

Company activities and impact

Sitopia Farm is a not for profit social enterprise. We are a modern, urban farm in London. We grow vegetables and flowers using organic, regenerative, and no-dig principles and sell direct to our local community, to chefs, and to florists. Through our farming and events, courses and community volunteering, we reconnect people to the soil, the joy of good food and flowers, and to each other. We live in a world shaped by food, a Sitopia. At the moment, we live in a bad Sitopia. Our food system is broken. The world is in the grip of multiple crises: the climate emergency; food poverty; diet-related mental and physical disease; and many of us feel totally disconnected from the natural world. We're on a mission to change this. Good food is our religion. We have a vision of a world where the food we eat nourishes both people and planet. From our farm in South East London, we are creating a better Sitopia, where we reconnect people to the soil, to the joy of good food and flowers and to each other. With thanks to the generosity and vision of the landowners, the Woodlands Farm Trust, we grow on two acres on their wider farm. We are proudly female-led and have an entirely female team. Our Advisory Board is also 60% female and 40% BAME and our Directors are 67% female, 33% BAME. During December 2023-November 2024 we achieved the following: - expanded our hyper-local distribution network, with an expansion in coverage of our veg bag scheme and a significant increase in customers, now providing fresh organic vegetables to our local area all year round - grew c. 200-300 different crop varieties, producing tonnes of vegetables and 10s of 1000s of stems of flowers - provided food at subsidised rates to low income households and donated to community groups - approximately 70% sold within a few miles’ radius of the farm (majority on site/ within Greenwich and Bexley boroughs) - created a new local wholesale circular economy network, selling our produce to new customers and making use of their materials that would otherwise have gone to waste (flower buckets from florists, crates from veg customers) - delivery of 1788 hours of community volunteering at our weekly sessions on the farm with a diverse range of volunteers, creating community and enhancing physical & mental health, new skills development and healthier food behaviours - ran 7 food and flower day-long growing courses, training 66 people in organic horticulture and providing 24% places free to those on low incomes (targeted at ethnic minorities under-represented in horticulture) - started to develop a schools programme, including 3 trial activities delivered with 90 children with very positive feedback - hosted 15 team days reaching over 200 individuals from a wide range of organisations, including potential investors and decision-makers in global food policy, who came and learnt first hand about more agroecological farming methods and business models - expanded our team, creating new jobs and contributing to the local economy - successfully passed annual Soil Association inspection and organic status renewed - 300+ volunteers engaged - expanded our social media and newsletter followers by 1000+ - 1000+ visitors to farm - significant local/national media coverage - some of these activities were supported by generous grants from the City Bridges Trust, Naturesave and ReLondon

Consultation with stakeholders

Sitopia Farm has diverse and multiple stakeholders. In its broadest sense our mission is to change the food system, which affects everyone. In seeking to model what can be achieved in a short time scale, we are also seeking to influence others to support or create similar farms elsewhere. We work closely with the Woodlands Farm Trust, the landowners, and meet regularly to share concerns and plan joint activities. One of our Directors also sits on the Woodlands Farm Trust Board which meets monthly. This means that we support the wider board and specifically help on fundraising, seek to link in with other activities and signpost volunteering opportunities and volunteer at their events. We also consult with them on our activities on a frequent basis. Our more visible engagement is with our local stakeholders: those living near the farm who buy our produce, who visit our farm, whose children attend schools or local community projects who we have hosted or donated food to, those who donate their time to volunteer at the farm. Specifically one of the key benefits of having a monthly on-site pop up shop through much of the year allows us direct face to face conversations with our customers and local people. We also engage heavily through our social media channels, in particular through Instagram where most posts receive significant positive follower interaction. Rather than formal consultations at this stage we seek in all we do to engage closely with our community and seek feedback where relevant on our produce and activities. This year we also undertook monitoring and evaluation work with those who attended our growing courses and team days, which has helped us to continually improve our offering. We have also spoken and presented publicly about our work on various panels/ events and hosted a number of visitors for tours including councillors and officers from Greenwich and Newham councils.
