Transparent Presence CIC supports transgender and non-binary people and their families and friends across Cornwall, UK. In the financial year 2023-2024, the activities of Transparent Presence CIC has benefited the community through many ways. Transparent Youth Project provides peer support for parents and carers of transgender and non-binary and gender diverse young people whilst the young people themselves engage in activities which build mental wellbeing, resilience and self-esteem and reduce social isolation for all. Vocal Presence inclusive community choir: offers weekly rehearsal space and performance opportunities whilst bringing people together to reduce social isolation and increase mental wellbeing through community singing. Members have built friendships which continue outside the rehearsal space and provide support and acceptance. Wings - Identities taking flight community art project: creates art work including refurbishing and creating large scale ‘pride wings’. This allows people to celebrate and show pride in their identity at community pride marches. They have also been the focal point of pop-up art exhibitions across the county, giving a showcase opportunity to gender diverse artists and the wider LGBTQ+ community. Gender diversity awareness training: provided to a number of organisations, businesses and schools. This empowers their staff to meet the needs of the trans and non-binary community and revisit things such as policies and paperwork to ensure inclusive practice. Business Ally plaque scheme: a safe space plaque scheme with organisations, public venues and businesses pledging themselves as safe spaces for transgender and non-binary people as well as the wider LGBTQ+ community. Social support groups are held once a month allowing trans and non-binary people and their families and friends to come along and share experiences, solve problems and build connections in a welcoming, public space. The ethos of these events is ‘Living Truth, Building Strength’. Wellbeing project: twice monthly in person events including drop in sessions and zine workshops to bring people together and reduce isolation.
The company’s stakeholders are those who engage in the projects run by Transparent Presence CIC and local organisations providing support to the community. The directors of the company developed the business model for the organisation based on their experience of talking to other transgender and non-binary people. We ask for feedback regularly at our support groups and projects, with everyone being given the opportunity to provide comments on what else we can do to meet the needs of the community. We also hold polls via our text service to ascertain interest in different activities. This has helped us to build a greater understanding of our community's needs and plan what we can do to meet them more effectively, such as increased youth support work, mental wellbeing project activities and a clothing exchange.
