Company activities and impact

PART 1 - GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF THE COMPANY’S ACTIVITIES AND IMPACT 23-24 has continued with our pattern of growth. We have increased our turnover, through grants, commissions, corporate sales and fundraising enabling more capacity in the operations team of the organisation which in turn we hope will lead to further growth. All our groups are running in person except our Relax Breathe Harmonise programmes designed to be delivered online. Sing & Breathe We have continued to run weekly sessions (40 per area per year) for participants with long term respiratory conditions, such as COPD and Pulmonary Fibrosis in Wakefield, Leeds and Halifax, Todmorden, Dewsbury and Huddersfield. Our sessions help participants to reduce breathlessness and isolation, improve wellbeing and increase positive self-management of the symptoms experienced with their respiratory condition. We still work closely with NHS respiratory physios, offering taster sessions as part of their pulmonary rehab programmes and taking referrals. Although we lost some NHS commissions this year, due to NHS core and programme cuts),we successfully secured funding to continue provision in all areas. Our newer groups have built in participant numbers throughout the year. Participant quotes: “The group is crucial to my mental health as well as my respiratory condition” “My breathing is much better. I don’t use my inhaler as much or my oxygen” “I am able to focus more on and be more conscious of breathing control. This has improved my life in general” “I was able to reduce and then stop inhaler use after a relatively short time of attending Sing & Breathe” We have produced some case study videos. Please see Michael’s story here Singing for Happiness, Orb This group, commissioned by Orb Community Enterprise, continues to run in hybrid form with participants able to join in person or online through zoom, though most participants have returned in person. Sessions include warm up exercises, singing and an opportunity for participants to connect and chat, offering vital support. Participants are referred to Orb with a long and enduring mental health challenge. Participants accessing the singing group report reduced stress & anxiety, increased sense of community and utilisation of breath techniques and songs to control anxiety and panic attacks. Participants also report increased confidence, happiness and wellbeing. Sessions are now supported by a volunteer managed by Orb. Relax Breathe Harmonise Demand for our 10 week online programme for people living with Long Covid has slightly reduced due to both a reduction in prevalence and severity but also changes in the LC pathways. Our programme was developed based on research, conversations with respiratory physios and people living with the condition and our own expertise. We have been successfully re-commissioned by NHS in Wakefield and Bradford but lost funding for Calderdale and Leeds due to cuts in core and programme funding in the NHS. However, we continue to work closely with NHS long covid teams in these areas, still accept referrals and cover costs through income generation and fundraising. Once participants have completed the 10 weeks, they can join an online maintenance group or attend one of our face to face Sing & Breathe groups. Impacts for participants include reduced breathlessness, reduced brain fog, reduced stress & anxiety, increased energy, increased positivity, increased ability to self manage symptoms. Research into the methodology and impacts of our RBH programme have been published in a peer reviewed journal and can be found here Sing From the Heart Our Sing from the Heart group for people living with dementia and their carers has proved to be both in demand and impactful. We have partnered with a local carers service who provide an activity co-ordinator to support participants. We now have over 25 people attending weekly. Singing for Parkinson’s We have been recommissioned for a further year by Parkinson’s UK local Halifax group to continue to deliver their singing group. Numbers have continued to grow. The group participants have performed at a number of public events and conducted a ‘flash mob” in Marks & Spencer in Halifax Corporate Workshops Our bookings included workshops and event energisers for organisations including Backfoot Trust, Best Business Women Awards, Making Space and Clear Events “Award ceremonies can be boring and dull. Each year we have tried to do something different - How magical could it be to have 300 people singing together? I was not disappointed. A feeling of us all coming together and singing is such a bonding experience and it’s one I will never forget. I would highly recommend Emma and her group she is utterly amazing. Ideal for conferences or any event that requires crowd participation, team building or just something a bit different” Debbie Gilbert, Best Business Women Awards

Consultation with stakeholders

We continue to gather regular feedback from participants through evaluations forms, verbal feedback and testimonials. All feedback is considered in the planning of our existing services as well as the development of new ones. Evaluation forms our Relax Breathe Harmonise programmes and Sing and Breath sessions were developed in consultation with Respiratory physios and long covid teams in the NHS and also with Asthma Lung UK (formally British Lung Foundation)
