Year Ending: 31 March 2025

Company activities and impact

Due to demand, we extended 2024’s Kirkcudbright Fringe Festival, and the four-day weekend included significant figures and acts like National Theatre of Scotland, Scottish Ensemble, Pro-fessor John Curtice, economist Will Hutton and journalist John Crace. We used more venues, 20 in total, and responded to 2023 feedback by adding food outlets, and a ticket and information Hub. In total, we sold 1, 600 tickets and 500 people attended free events. Our 2024 turnover was c£27, 000, of which c£7, 500 was from funding or sponsorship. We en-gaged many local acts including young musicians who won the headline spot at Harbour Square via a Battle of the Bands competition. An external evaluation gained feedback from c20% of 2024 Fringe attendees. The weekend’s welcome, ‘buzz’ and friendliness were highlighted; and quality and value appreciated. One person praised ‘the uplifting vibe and way in which our beautiful town was alive with locals and visitors having a great time’; another commented ‘if you continue to mirror this level of professionalism and success then I expect Kirkcudbright to make a name for itself on the ‘festi-val’ tour’. One Kirkcudbright business observed that ‘the Fringe is the best thing to happen in the town in years’.

Consultation with stakeholders

We worked with Kirkcudbright Academy and programmed bespoke events for school students looking at gender roles during the Fringe weekend, led by performer and writer Alan Bissett. We set up a new collaboration with Kirkcudbright Galleries – the Pauline Saul Artistic Residen-cy, named after one of the founders of Kirkcudbright’s Arts and Crafts Trail – funded by Dum-fries and Galloway Council Regional Arts Fund and DG Unlimited. The 2024 recipient, young disabled photographer Dylan Lombard, ran workshops for the Academy and Kirkcudbright Youth Project and photographed local people and businesses for an exhibition in Kirkcudbright Galleries that attracted 2, 500 people. During the last year, we set up an Advisory Group of approximately 15 individuals and organi-sations to work with us on strategic and forward thinking – these include Dumfries and Gallo-way Arts Festival, St Cuthbert’s Wanderers FC, The Imaginarium, KBT Storage and Ground-works, Kirkcudbright Cookery School etc. We have held one meeting, and sought advice via other means from members, during the year and included this thinking into our plans. We commissioned an external evaluation that gained feedback from c20% of 2024 Fringe at-tendees. The weekend’s welcome, ‘buzz’ and friendliness were highlighted; and quality and value appreciated. One person praised ‘the uplifting vibe and way in which our beautiful town was alive with locals and visitors having a great time’; another commented ‘if you continue to mirror this level of professionalism and success then I expect Kirkcudbright to make a name for itself on the ‘festival’ tour’.
