Socially Engaged Art Salon [SEAS CIC] is a BAME / BPOC artists-led organisation that promotes the works of artists and communities that are underrepresented in the visual arts sector. SEAS also promotes socially engaged art practices that contribute to human rights, social, racial, and environmental justice, help engender community cohesion and further well-being. The artists and communities we are mainly working with are Black and People of Colour, LGBTQAI+, migrants and refugees, people with disabilities and low-income communities and artists who are not represented by commercial galleries. SEAS achieves this through exhibitions, art, community events, and creative workshops. Most of our exhibitions and associated activities tie into national and international days or months celebrating, for example, Pride and LGBT History Month, Black History Month, and Refugee Week. Most of our exhibitions and activities occur in non-art spaces, including libraries and community centres and outdoor public spaces. The exhibitions we produce amplify the voices of communities and artists who are still marginalised from the art market and public art arena, and thus do not benefit from what the arts can offer, including the mental and social benefits of engagement in creative work, contribution to social cohesion and wellbeing, fighting loneliness, increasing self-esteem and confidence, and more. All of our activities are offered free of charge.
The main stakeholders are regular and occasional visitors to the exhibitions and other events that are taking place at the Black and Minorites Ethnic Community Partnership Centre, at the LGBTQ+ Ledward Centre and at the Jubilee Library. We often also collaborate with community groups and charitable organisations. Each exhibition included optional feedback in the form of a visitors ' book, which we hold. Other activities included providing verbal feedback, particularly regarding the workshops. We also had formal and informal discussions with the managers of the community centre and The library regarding our activities and the way to improve them. The main feedback we received from the stakeholders was regarding the need for a longer time for planning and an increase in outreach and publicity. However, the significant reductions in funds allocated to the arts in Brighton, specifically, and in England as a whole, meant that this target was difficult to achieve.
SEAS's creative director has received £9,480 for the period of the report.
No transfer of assets other than for full consideration
