Southstainable CIC is an educational social enterprise based in South London, dedicated to promoting sustainable living by equipping young people and adults with essential life skills. Our mission is to foster a sustainability mindset through upcycling, DIY repair, low-waste cooking, conscious shopping, and other practical activities that encourage self-sufficiency, for the benefit of both communities and the environment. Incorporated in December 2023, Southstainable was born out of community consultations with local young people, schools, and residents. These conversations revealed a strong need for practical, hands-on education, especially for those transitioning into independent living. Our programmes uniquely focus on self-sufficiency and sustainability, with a particular emphasis on the often-overlooked 16–30 age group. In Spring 2024, we piloted our flagship Conscious Living programme with local young people. The programme introduced participants to sustainable cooking and low-waste food preparation, sewing and upcycling clothing, basic woodworking and DIY repair skills, as well as a guided conscious shopping experience at Brixton Market. These hands-on activities aimed to build confidence, self-sufficiency, and environmental awareness through practical learning. Since June 2024, we’ve partnered with SpiralSkill to deliver sustainable cooking and recycling experiences in local schools. As part of the Igniting Young Minds initiative, we ran practical workshops for students at City Heights E-ACT Academy in Lambeth, sparking conversations around sustainability and everyday impact. This partnership will continue into 2025 and beyond. Over Summer 2024, we received £5,000 in funding from BIG South London, in partnership with Kingston and Roehampton Universities. With this support, we offered our 6-week Adulting for Sustainability programme free of charge to university students, refining the content through their feedback to better reflect youth voices and needs. In October 2024, we took part in Lambeth Climate Day at Town Hall, showcasing our work and running a free workshop on conscious grocery shopping and packaging recycling. We also organised a community gardening event at Agnes Riley Garden, Clapham Park, where we helped revamp the space alongside local volunteers, including staff from HSBC Clapham. Since December 2024, Southstainable has been based at 3Space International House in Brixton, where we run free workshops in the community room and host open events for local residents.
Southstainable’s stakeholders include the residents of South London, particularly those in Lambeth, Southwark, and Wandsworth, as well as local businesses, fellow social enterprises, and educational institutions such as schools and universities. Several of our directors have lived, studied, or worked in South London, and these personal connections have deeply influenced how we engage with and serve the local community. Our office is located in the heart of Brixton, within a shared space that brings together youth organisations and local enterprises. This proximity fosters daily conversations about the needs and aspirations of young people and local residents. We also participate in a regular business and social enterprise network meeting every other Wednesday, which helps us stay attuned to emerging priorities in the community. We are committed to ongoing dialogue with our stakeholders. Before, during, and after each of our workshops and educational programmes, we actively seek feedback, both through informal conversations and structured tools such as questionnaires and evaluation forms. This continuous feedback loop ensures our work remains responsive, relevant, and grounded in the voices of those we serve.
Directors were paid £4,000 for their work as facilitators during workshops. No director received compensation for working as a director, which remain on a voluntary bases.
