- Supported 15 community orchards with advice, workshops & training during this period. - Provided training in traditional orchard skills including pruning and grafting for those caring for community spaces & supplied fruit trees to community orchards and gardens and private orchard owners. - Operated a voluntarily-coordinated hire service for our community apple pressing equipment & resources to help try to ensure that apples grown in Cornwall are put to good use rather than wasted, as part of our commitment to promoting food security and community action. - Acted as a signposting service for orchard owners seeking a use for their harvests and small cider makers or juicers seeking apples to harvest. - Supported the development of Redruth's community orchard groups, led by volunteers. - Coordinated the Cornwall Orchard Network in a voluntary capacity to bring orchardists, orchard owners, orchard volunteers, ecologists & enthusiasts together to share knowledge, experience & best practice, encouraging connection and shared objectives. This included convening the inaugural Cornwall Orchard Network Gathering in May 2024 at Kehelland Trust which brought together 50 orchard enthusiasts to learn and share news.
Our stakeholders include our regular volunteers at community orchards in Redruth. Here we operate whatsapp groups and an email list to coordinate activity and invite coordination and input by all. We organise regular surveys that invite volunteers, park users and local residents to tell us their thoughts on the orchard spaces and what they'd like to see. We also organise celebration events that offer informal opportunities to discuss our projects and gain feedback from local people & volunteers. All of these processes help us to continually respond to the needs and desires of volunteers and local people with regards to what we do, and how local green spaces meet the needs of people, particularly with regards to local food growing, sustainability and biodiversity.
