Principal activities of the company

To provide a news and information for residents and local people living and work-ing in the area of the London Borough of Newham through regular publication of a printed information service and an online news service. To ensure such information is accessible, truthful, ethical and politically independent. To encourage and support civic education through the provision of training in in-formation ethics, journalism and media literacy. To be open and accountable to the community we serve through transparency in our journalism, governance and administrative work.

    Basis of measurement and preparation

    These financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the provisions of Section 1A (Small Entities) of Financial Reporting Standard 102

    Tangible fixed assets depreciation policy

    Tangible assets are included at cost less depreciation and impairment. Depreciation has been provided at the following rates in order to write off the assets over their estimated useful lives: 25% RD

    Other accounting policies

    Basis of preparation The accounts have been prepared under the historical cost convention as modified by the revaluation of certain fixed assets. Presentation currency The accounts are presented in £ sterling.

Company activities and impact

During the year Newham Voices published 12 editions and continued to provide a regular service of news, public infornation and cultural support for people who live and work in Newham, one of London's most diverse and economically-challenging Boroughs. This year the company completed its transition process in its relations with Social Spider CIC. The Board oversaw a transition in which Newham Voices has agreed that Social Spider CIC, another community interest company which publishes community newspapers in Walthamstow, Enfield, Barnet and Haringey, now has responsibility for the management and advertising activities. This arrangement has greatly improved the efficiency of our work. The editorial issues raised by the paper during the year have focused on the challenges facing the local authority, particularly in the area of housing, homelessness, social care and community health. Thes have again contributed to raising awareness within the local community.

Consultation with stakeholders

The Newham Voices is a regular contributor to major information-sharing networks of local groups through WhatsApp networks across the london Borough of Newham. There have been a number of co-operative initiatives -- in support of local parks, actions to assist refugee and migrants and support for the People Powered Places programme which involves many of Newham's commmunity of more than 150 voluntary organisations. The feedback from these initiatives continues to be positive, adding to wider community awareness of the paper and its contents. Newham Voices has continued to promote race equality initiatives and has particularly supported the community voices around the Carpenter's Estate regeneration projects, one of Europe largest urban programmes which was launched during the year. Two meetings of readers and supporters have been held during the year to get feedback on outr work.
