The principal activity of Start Change CIC continues to be to provide advocacy and mentoring services to minority communities within Black, Minority, and Ethnic groups, fostering pathways to recovery and equity. Our core mission is to empower vulnerable individuals from marginalised communities, enabling them to gain the tools and attitudes to fulfil their dreams, contributing to a socially fair and sustainable society. Community Interest Statement During the financial year ended 31 October 2024, Start Change CIC remained steadfast in its commitment to addressing mental health inequalities and advocating for vulnerable individuals within marginalised communities, particularly across the South East of England. While the period presented significant challenges, notably a pause in securing new direct service contracts due to the general election and subsequent change in government funding priorities, our dedication to our social purpose remained undiminished. Our primary focus during this time shifted towards intensive engagement and advocacy with various government departments and key stakeholders in the area of equality. This involved: - Policy Dialogue: Actively participating in discussions and consultations related to mental health policy, racial equality frameworks (such as PCREF), and broader social justice initiatives affecting our target communities. - Needs Assessment and Research: Continuing to gather insights and provide evidence-based perspectives on the specific challenges faced by vulnerable individuals from marginalised communities in accessing equitable support and services. This ongoing work, though not directly contract-funded, is crucial for informing future interventions. - Relationship Building: Strengthening relationships with officials and policymakers to ensure the voices and needs of those we serve are heard at the highest levels. This included advocating for sustained and targeted funding for community-led initiatives that directly address systemic inequalities. - Strategic Planning: Utilising this period to refine our strategic approach, develop new project proposals, and build internal capacity, positioning Start Change CIC to respond effectively once funding opportunities stabilise. Despite the temporary slowdown in direct service delivery contracts, our strategic engagement has ensured that Start Change CIC continues to play a vital role in shaping the landscape of support for vulnerable and marginalised communities, laying the groundwork for future impactful projects. Our efforts during this period underscore our unwavering commitment to our community interest purpose, even in the face of external economic and political shifts.
Start Change CIC maintains an ongoing commitment to robust consultation with its key stakeholders to ensure our services remain relevant and impactful. During the 2023/2024 financial year, our consultation activities included: Direct Beneficiary Feedback: Through our individual mentoring and advocacy sessions, we regularly gather qualitative feedback from the men from racialised communities we support. This ongoing dialogue is central to adapting our approach and identifying emerging needs. We also conducted informal check-ins with past beneficiaries to understand the long-term impact of our interventions. Partnership Engagement: We actively engaged with our key partners, including Essex Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust (EPUT) and other community organisations, through regular meetings and collaborative forums. These discussions provide valuable insights into broader community needs and service gaps. Advocacy and Policy Dialogue: Our active engagement with government departments and equality organisations involved sharing insights derived from our direct work, ensuring that the voices of vulnerable and marginalised communities in the South East of England are represented in policy discussions. This indirect form of consultation helps shape the environment in which our beneficiaries operate. Accessibility: We ensure our consultation methods are as accessible as possible, accommodating diverse communication needs and ensuring that all voices, including those of disabled individuals, can be heard effectively
