Surf Cerrito is a surf therapy program based in Cerrito de la Virgen, Peru, that uses surfing as a tool to promote mental, physical, and social well-being among local youth. During the financial year 2023–2024, Surf Cerrito’s activities have positively impacted the community in the following ways: - 97 children and young people participated in regular surf therapy sessions, with 94 classes held throughout the year. - The program offered a safe, supportive space for children to improve their surfing, swimming, mental health, and connection to community, with 520 minutes of beach cleaning and 312 hours in the water logged by participants. - Through a structured approach to surf therapy, 74–91% of participants reported positive changes in their self-confidence, well-being, and sense of community, as measured by internationally recognised well-being questionnaires. - A dedicated girls-only surf class was launched, welcoming 15 participants weekly, offering a safe and empowering space to address gender inequality and increase girls’ participation in surfing. - Surf Cerrito hosted and participated in 5 surf competitions, giving young surfers the chance to showcase their talent and resilience on regional and national platforms. - The organisation welcomed 54 volunteers from 13 countries, who supported in roles ranging from surf instruction and environmental education to communications, construction, and fundraising. - Infrastructure was significantly improved: new changing rooms, showers, and a surfboard storage unit were built; a mototaxi with trailer was acquired to reduce transport costs and increase reliability. - Surf Cerrito grew its global presence through participation in international conferences (ISTO, Regenerative Surf Conference), the release of the Libertad documentary, and the expansion of its UK university ambassador program. - Two international fundraising challenges raised critical funds to sustain the project and expand school infrastructure. Surf Cerrito continues to grow as a grassroots program with international reach, staying deeply connected to the local community while sharing its model and impact with the global surf therapy movement.
Surf Cerrito’s primary stakeholders are the children and teenagers from the community of Cerrito de la Virgen who participate in the surf therapy program, as well as the local and international volunteers who help deliver it. The program was developed in direct response to the needs and realities of young people in the area, shaped through ongoing conversations with families, community members, and the young surfers themselves. We regularly consult with our young participants through structured and informal methods. For example, a surf therapy well-being questionnaire was completed by 23 children and teens to assess the impact of the program on their mental, social, and emotional health. The findings, showing high levels of reported improvement in confidence, school motivation, and happiness, directly inform how we shape future programming. Weekly “charlas” (group discussions) also provide a safe space for participants to share their thoughts, explore challenges in their lives, and help guide the themes we address in class. Volunteers are another key stakeholder group. In 2024, we improved our onboarding process based on volunteer feedback, including the development of training materials and dedicated accommodations to support collaboration and well-being. Volunteers are involved in all areas of the organisation, from surf instruction and environmental education to communications, construction, and monitoring & evaluation, and regularly participate in weekly team meetings to reflect on lessons, share observations, and suggest improvements. This participatory, bottom-up approach ensures that the direction of Surf Cerrito remains responsive, inclusive, and grounded in the lived experiences of those it serves and depends on.
