Principal activities of the company

Child Rights and Youth Justice C.I.C. advocates for a world where children’s rights are fully understood and protected in the justice system. We work in co-production with young people who have lived experience of the justice system. We work to ensure children have specialist criminal lawyers, to improve understanding of children’s rights in the justice system and to build a fairer youth justice system. We achieve this through advocacy, engagement with stakeholders, participation in expert working groups and advisory work, delivering training and developing guidance, tools and resources to ensure criminal lawyers, youth justice professionals and the judiciary understand children's rights.

Company activities and impact

Child Rights and Youth Justice (CRYJ) CIC advocates for a world where children’s rights are fully understood and protected in the justice system. During the financial year 2023-24, CRYJ has benefited children by: - improving understanding of how age disputes can be challenged and resolved by criminal practitioners when the issue arises for unaccompanied asylum seekers are prosecuted for criminal offences. Working with Kent criminal duty solicitors this work has ensured children arriving in small boats and lorries are not held in adult prisons and adult hotels and prosecuted through the adult criminal justice system. - working with the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) and the Mayor's Office for Policing and Crime (MOPAC) to embed Child First practices in London custody suites. CRYJ supported the development of a Pilot study, the Child first training and Research Pilot (ChiRP) project in Brixton and Wood Green Custody Suites. - improving understanding of the prevalence of Special Educational Needs & Disabilities and Neurodivergence in the Youth Justice System by being part of the SIEFF Foundation Working Group on SEND, Neurodivergence and Youth Justice. - supporting the work of the MoJ/YJB Quality of Advocacy Working Group to ensure children receive the highest quality legal representation. Developing Good Practice Guidance on Certificates for Assigned Advocates to ensure children in the Youth Court are represented by experienced and specialist advocates, and supporting the introduction of an uplift in legal aid fees in all Youth Court indictable cases. - promoting greater understanding of care experience amongst the legal community and challenging stigma by working to develop a care experience led a mentoring organisation - Lawyers Who Care.

Consultation with stakeholders

Our stakeholders are children who have contact with the justice system. We work in co-production with our stakeholders. Our work is guided by our Youth Advisory Consultants; these are young people with lived experience of the justice system.
