Pro Sport Development International CIC (PSD International) leverages sport, physical activity and play to improve the lives of young people, with a focus on working with those from marginalised and underserved communities. Our vision is to enable young people across the world to learn requisite life skills, combat gender inequality and build their capacities through sport-based approaches, in order to become confident and gender-sensitive leaders, thereby boosting their overall potential. Community Sports Programme PSD International has continued to facilitate the Community Sports Programme (CSP) in the city of Bhubaneswar, in the Eastern state of Odisha in India this past financial year. The CSP serves young people between the ages of 5-16 years from low-income and marginalised backgrounds residing in slum settlements across the city of Bhubaneswar. Using a purposefully designed, evidence-based and gender-sensitive multi-sport and physical activity pedagogy, the CSP enables these young people to improve their health and wellbeing, develop life skills and values and build capacities on gender, adolescent health and child rights. The CSP emphasises on the participation of girls (along with boys), teaching young people to work together in mixed-gender groups. Moreover, the young people are empowered as leaders through the programme to change the status quo in their families, schools and communities by challenging gender stereotypes and social norms. In the financial year between November 2023 and October 2024, with the support of PSD In-ternational, the CSP directly reached out to a total of 990 young people between the ages of 5-16 years (48% girls) across six community-based schools, along with indirectly impacting 2,700 associated stakeholders including peers, parents, teachers and community members. Out of these 990 young people, 432 were between the ages of 5-11 years, with this segment of the programme being supported by the Global Fund for Children. Several of the CSP participants got opportunities to participate in sports-based events and exposure opportunities throughout the year, including sports festivals, sports competitions and capacity-building workshops by third-party facilitators. Other than working directly with young people in the preceding year, the CSP also engaged with 218 parents and 195 school teachers of these young people through 10 meetings and training workshops. These engagements built the parents’ and teachers’ awareness of the CSP programme’s objectives, methodology and activities. Moreover, these sessions provided an opportunity to develop their capacities on key issues such as child rights, child abuse and safeguarding. The CSP’s impact in the previous year is summarised below: -42% increase in young people (40% girls; 43% boys) who reported participating in sports and physical activities for 4+ days per week -80% of young people (81% girls; 79% boys) improved their physical literacy, with an average increase of 45% across various fundamental movement skills
PSD International's stakeholders include young people, their parents and peers, their schools and school teachers, sports trainers as well as other sport and development organisations and institutions working towards enhancing and positively impacting young people’s lives through sport-based approaches. As part of our interventions in 2023-24 in India, PSD International consulted with the young people (especially the Community Youth Leaders), their parents and school teachers as well as trainers, facilitators and collaborating organisations. These consultations took place before initiating new cohorts of the programme, during the programme delivery phase as well as at the end of the programme cohorts. Consultations with these key stakeholders ensured their full support to make these interventions successful, along with utilising the most effective approaches to positively and sustainably impact the lives of young people. In 2023-24 PSD International prioritised on building the capacities of school teachers, parents, facilitators and programme managers to ensure that they support, enable and advocate the safe, meaningful and sustainable participation of young people in sport, physical activity and play. PSD International also participated in various meetings globally with a variety of organisational and institutional stakeholders to enhance the impact of using sport for social change in the lives of young people. PSD International actively engaged in various dialogues and conversations with these stakeholders to learn from them, share our successes and challenges and collectivise a collaborative of organisations to advocate and communicate the impact of sport for social change more effectively.
