Casus Pax continued to grow and develop throughout the year 2023-2024, increasing the scope and range of our fundamental projects as well as the impact of our work within our selected community. We now have 4 core initiatives: the material supply of medical and search & rescue (S&R) equipment, consumables and vehicles directly to front emergency services staff and medical practitioners, education and academic outreach, academic heritage based war-crimes data collection and analysis, and cultural exchange. Medical and S&R: Our material delivery has been increasingly successful, and we are proud of our record of efficient and safe injection of life-saving materials, directly to emergency response practitioners, across all front-line regions. We have, as of November 2024, delivered over 1 million pieces of medical and S&R equipment, and a fleet of 25 emergency vehicles. Alongside this substantial ongoing delivery of supplies of modern medical equipment, we have been successful in aligning donors with specific, extraordinarily high impact and high value material injections including x-ray machines and electrosurgical suites to paediatric hospitals in front line regions. Education and Academic Outreach: 2023-2024 was transformative for Casus Pax’s education endeavours. We have signed mutual support partnerships with several education institutions in Ukraine, have participated in dozens of teaching and in-person language workshops - events which have reached over 200 students, and co-organised and co-hosted the first in a series of multi-disciplinary, international outreach conferences – commencing with a European Night of Science event, both virtual and in person, from National University Zaporizhzhia Polytechnic. The value of these outreach events far outstrips the immediate academic benefit of collaborative interaction, opportunities for which have diminished significantly since 2022. They provide an opportunity for emotional expression, sharing of experiences and psychological wellbeing. The events have become one of the most requested components of Casus Pax deployments. Alongside outreach events, we have been successful in introducing novel education technologies to Ukraine. BBC Micro:Bit has been one such example of high impact material provision which has fostered development of STEM curricula in some of Ukraine’s most vulnerable regions. BBC Education have been tremendously supportive in 2024, and we hope to grow this project into 2025. Heritage Protection: Our work in Ukraine has exposed us to shifting physical hazards and operational challenges which have helped to sculpt a safe and agile set of best practices. We have adopted rigorous logistics regimes which mitigate a degree of risk and allow an efficient and helpful presence in some very vulnerable locations. It is from these experiences and upon the academic foundations of our founders that Casus Pax has engaged in the operational deployment of dedicated heritage safeguarding and archaeological investigation in Ukraine. Our team have a proven track record of professionalism and safe practice in front line regions and after consultation with senior faculty from several Universities in Ukraine, the UK and USA we established a series of operational objectives: - The equipping of partner agencies dedicated to frontline heritage rescue operations with ap-propriate handling materials and training, - The recording and analysis of damage to known archaeological sites and to the heritage fabric of Ukraine, - Analysis of looting and targeted destruction. Initial field work took place in Summer 2024 after gaining the endorsement and approval of The Ukrainian Ministry of Culture and with the close support of NPU. A total of 6 initial surveys were completed of heritage sites exhibiting evidence of deliberate and targeted damage with a further 12 settlements identified and scheduled for examination and survey in future deployments. Over 12,000 data points have so far been collected, with analysis ongoing, with initial publication of findings expected Q4 2025. Cultural Exchange: Throughout 2024 Casus Pax has worked closely with other Non-profit organisations, education institutions and governmental bodies to promote cultural exchange between the UK and Ukraine and to promote Ukrainian culture and arts within the UK. In Spring 2024 we partnered with the Antytila Foundation, a Ukrainian humanitarian organisation founded and led by members of the band Antytila. Through this partnership Casus Pax was tasked with co-ordinating and organising a large-scale fundraising concert, itself part of the much larger EU and Ukrainian Embassy supported, CULTURE Vs WAR initiative. The concert took place on June 5th 2024 with approximately 800 in attendance. Over £9,000 was raised on the day for the purchase of civilian rescue boats to be deployed by Ukrainian emergency services in Kherson region. In addition, Casus Pax has continued to co-operate with CULTURE Vs WAR events and have participated in other exhibitions and cultural events, such as the UNISSUED DIPLOMA exhibition hosted by Imperial College London. We anticipate our cultural exchange involvement to develop into 2025.
Casus Pax identifies the following stake holders: National and regional leadership of the Ukrainian National Police and Rescue Services. We enjoy a transparent and mutually supportive relationship with the Ukrainian Emergency Services as is demonstrated by our Memorandum of Co-operation. We have regular communication with leadership and field specialists to ensure that expectations and practical considerations of useful humanitarian delivery are upheld as a core working principle. Schools and Universities in Zaporizhzhia, Kyiv, Sumy and Dnipropetrovsk Regions. Ukrainian state bodies. We have regular communication with Ukrainian national institutions to ensure that our support is well directed and efficiently deployable. Other NGOs and Non-Profit Organisations operating in this field. Co-operation and information sharing is fundamental to the safe and efficient completion of humanitarian endeavours and Casus Pax maintains open and detailed discord to assess developing civilian needs from a logistical and supply perspective. This level of conversation and stakeholder outreach maintains a good level of organisation and prevents wasteful and unnecessary expenditure and inappropriate delivery. Civilian population in working areas. We have regular communications with civilian leaders and groups to best assess where humanitarian surpluses and deficits are developing which allows us to better co-operate with our partners and industry sectors to respond.
