The BS3 Winter Lantern Projects Community Interest Company is a voluntary organisation who works with the local community (schools, community groups, local businesses and residents) to organise and fund a 3-month creative project culminating in a Lantern Parade which lights up the streets of Bedminster in the BS3 area of Bristol. The Parade includes representatives from groups, displaying the large and small lanterns they have made, supported by bands, local Councillors and the MP. The participating groups benefit from a creative experience led by talented artists, supporting team working and pride in their local community, as well as the experience of showcasing their lanterns to the thousands of spectators who gather on the streets to watch the Parade. The local community traders who provide sponsorship for the project, benefit from increased footfall on parade day and an increase profile in the local community and beyond. The many volunteers who help marshal on parade day take great pride in being involved in the event and are great ambassadors for the CIC. The CIC mainly use social media and a website www.lanternparade.org to promote the work of the group, to promote community engagement and increased community pride The CIC receive a lot of positive feedback from the participating groups, in particular the primary schools state the children look forward to being part of the Parade and can link curriculum subjects to the creation of their lanterns.
The CIC’s main stakeholders are the participants of the 3-month project, designing, building and displaying the lanterns. The CIC and artists work closely with the children and teachers/adults throughout the project to ensure the end product reflects the ideas, creativity and aspirations of the groups. The CIC also run community groups to allow residents to participate in creating artistic pieces of work, supported by artists to build on their ideas, knowledge of the local area and encourage and develop creativity. The local traders who provide sponsorship are another group of stakeholders who are consulted, this includes the potential route of the parade to ensure maximum benefit to the traders and an increased profile through our social media and website. After each event, all stakeholders are asked for feedback, including things which could be improved, and this information is used in the planning stages for future events. An example of this was a changed route to incorporate additional traders. Although not strictly stakeholders, the CIC also work closely with Bristol City Council, the Police and public transport to ensure the parade and route conforms with all health and safety provisions. The safety of all participants, volunteers and spectators is a very high priority for the CIC.
