In 2024, our CIC delivered substantial community benefit through accessible music programs serving over 18s from diverse cultural backgrounds across Newham, Camden and Hackney boroughs. Core Activities: Weekly inclusive workshops and rehearsals in partnership with Newham Music, providing musical leadership opportunities and peer-leading skills to a core group of 30 regular participants Monthly open jam sessions attracting over 500 attendees throughout the year, creating accessible entry points for community participation Free community performances as the Flotsam Orchestra across London venues 4-day intensive residency culminating in a professional-standard concert at minimal cost to participants Sold-out performance for 300 people at a premier East London venue, showcasing diverse musical styles typically underrepresented in top-tier venues Community Benefit Delivered: Our programs provided underserved communities with regular, free access to high-quality music education and performance opportunities. Participants gained skills in diverse world music traditions, developed confidence and leadership abilities, and improved language skills through multicultural musical collaboration. Measurable Impact: Participants reported increased confidence, enhanced musical and leadership capabilities, strengthened community connections, and reduced social isolation. Our programming specifically featured musical styles reflecting London's diverse residents, providing cultural representation often absent from mainstream venues. Accessibility Measures: All activities were free or heavily subsidized, with travel bursaries available for those in financial need, ensuring economic barriers did not prevent participation.
Our key stakeholders include workshop participants, community members attending events, and partner organizations including Newham Music, Grow Hackney, and Cody Docks venues. How the stakeholders have been consulted: Regular feedback surveys distributed to audiences and participants after workshops and events Participant meetings held regularly to gather input on programming and activities Partner consultations with collaborating organizations including Newham Music and venue partners Ongoing informal consultation through direct engagement during workshops and events Action the company has taken in response to feedback from its consultations: Survey responses consistently indicated that participants felt Flotsam had improved their mental wellbeing and increased their sense of community connection, validating our program approach. Based on stakeholder feedback, we have maintained our focus on free, accessible programming and continued our partnership model with local organizations. Regular participant input helps shape our weekly programming and ensures activities remain responsive to community needs and interests.
