Directors' report period ended 30 November 2024

The directors present their report with the financial statements of the company for the period ended 30 November 2024

Principal activities of the company

For the financial year from November 2023 to November 2024, this report outlines the significant progress made by the organisation in improving the well-being of boys of African descent and challenging ingrained stereotypes. Our mission is to improve emotional health, overall well-being, reduce anti-social behaviour, and promote positive community engagement. Our strategic approach involved a multi-faceted engagement with key stakeholders, including the boys themselves, their parents and carers, and community leaders. We regularly conducted questionnaires for both the boys and their parents, which proved invaluable in identifying areas requiring support and shaping the agenda for our weekly sessions. This also highlighted new parenting methods for parents to learn and unlearn. We engaged with community and faith leaders on a quarterly basis to gain insights into the anti-social behaviour and crime affecting our target audience, and their assistance was instrumental in securing specialists for sensitive topics such as suicide and county lines drug trafficking. Additionally, we maintained quarterly meetings with other community-led organisations to share best practices for handling challenging situations and to receive referrals for boys and their families. Guest professionals led sessions on various sessions such as anger management, offering practical strategies for boys to understand and healthily express their emotions. This not only helped the boys themselves but also reduced conflict at home, fostering a more peaceful family environment. Discussions on puberty and boys' sexuality were crucial for demystifying these topics. By providing accurate information, we helped boys build self-confidence and develop a healthier self-image, which in turn opened up more honest lines of communication with parents. The sessions also tackled external pressures. Addressing peer pressure empowered boys to make independent decisions and stand up for themselves, lessening the stress that often spills over into family life. Finally, defining personal values helped boys establish a strong moral compass. This organisation provides them with a framework for navigating future decisions and contributes to their overall sense of identity, creating a ripple effect of confidence and stability that strengthens the entire family unit. The feedback from both boys and their families highlighted the positive impact these sessions had on improving communication, understanding, and overall well-being. The organisation’s impact has been profound. We are proud to report that approximately 60 boys began giving back to their communities by volunteering, and parents have reported a significant and positive change in their sons' behaviour, noting their improved ability to express themselves without resorting to aggression or violence. The activities successfully promoted community cohesion and contributed to a reduction in the number of boys joining gangs, reinforcing our core belief that a community is only as strong as its people.

Consultation with stakeholders

We have several key stakeholders, the boys of African descent we serve, their parents and carers, as well as community and faith leaders. To understand their needs, we regularly use questionnaires for both the boys and their parents. This helps us pinpoint areas where they need support and identify topics for our weekly sessions. These surveys also highlight where parents and carers can improve by unlearning old habits and adopting new parenting methods. We also meet with community and faith leaders on a quarterly basis. These discussions help us understand the issues different communities face regarding anti-social behaviour and crime involving our target audience. They also help us find specialists who can speak on sensitive topics, such as suicide and county lines drug trafficking. Additionally, we hold quarterly meetings with other community organisations. These groups provide valuable guidance and support for handling challenging situations with the boys and their families. They also refer boys and their parents to our organisation when they need our help.
