From November 2023 to November 2024, In His Image Community Interest Company continued working to improve the well-being of boys of African descent. Our efforts challenged negative stereotypes about their upbringing through activities designed to enhance emotional health, boost overall well-being, reduce anti-social behaviour, and encourage positive community engagement. We hosted various sessions, both virtual and in-person, to address critical issues facing boys and their family groups. The impact of these discussions was profound, as they provided a safe and structured environment for boys to navigate complex challenges. Guest professionals led sessions on various sessions such as anger management, offering practical strategies for boys to understand and healthily express their emotions. This not only helped the boys themselves but also reduced conflict at home, fostering a more peaceful family environment. Discussions on puberty and boys' sexuality were crucial for demystifying these topics. By providing accurate information, we helped boys build self-confidence and develop a healthier self-image, which in turn opened up more honest lines of communication with parents. The sessions also tackled external pressures. Addressing peer pressure empowered boys to make independent decisions and stand up for themselves, lessening the stress that often spills over into family life. Finally, defining personal values helped boys establish a strong moral compass. This foundation provides them with a framework for navigating future decisions and contributes to their overall sense of identity, creating a ripple effect of confidence and stability that strengthens the entire family unit. The feedback from both boys and their families highlighted the positive impact these sessions had on improving communication, understanding, and overall well-being. The organisation had a significant impact, with approximately 60 boys becoming active volunteers in their communities. Parents reported noticeable positive changes, specifically highlighting their sons' improved ability to express themselves without resorting to aggression. The program's activities were successful in fostering community cohesion and contributed to a reduction in the number of boys joining gangs.
We have several key stakeholders, the boys of African descent we serve, their parents and carers, as well as community and faith leaders. To understand their needs, we regularly use questionnaires for both the boys and their parents. This helps us pinpoint areas where they need support and identify topics for our weekly sessions. These surveys also highlight where parents and carers can improve by unlearning old habits and adopting new parenting methods. We also meet with community and faith leaders on a quarterly basis. These discussions help us understand the issues different communities face regarding anti-social behaviour and crime involving our target audience. They also help us find specialists who can speak on sensitive topics, such as suicide and county lines drug trafficking. Additionally, we hold quarterly meetings with other community organisations. These groups provide valuable guidance and support for handling challenging situations with the boys and their families. They also refer boys and their parents to our organisation when they need our help.
