The Music Man Project Kent/Medway CIC (MMP Kent) was established as a Regional Partner Organisation of the Music Man Project UK to provide accessible opportunities for people in our local Kent/Medway communities with learning disabilities to come together to enjoy, learn, sing, play, and perform music. During the accounting period 2024–2025, MMP Kent has continued to provide regular and ongoing weekly music sessions, concerts, and events to support and benefit our community and to showcase the talents and abilities of our musicians. This has been a year of growth, new experiences and has provided some really special moments. Our students continue to go from strength to strength, and we are extremely proud of all that they have achieved, but what really stands out is the friendships that have formed, the support everyone shows each other, and the real sense of belonging that makes MMP Kent such a special place to be. Notable Highlights This Year Include: Increase in number of students attending in-person and online sessions Our Medway groups continue to thrive, with consistently strong attendance across all sessions at both venues. In Maidstone, we have seen positive growth following the change of venue last academic year. Having identified the need for a more central and accessible location, we've seen a steady increase in regular attendance. We remain optimistic that this new location will continue to support the growth and sustainability of our Maidstone group, serving the local community and surrounding areas more effectively. Five years on from their launch during lockdown, our weekly online Zoom sessions continue to be a popular and much-loved part of our programme. These online gatherings bring together Music Man Project performers from across the UK to sing, play, chat, and enjoy each other's company. The sessions provide a valuable opportunity to connect with other regions and maintain friendships. They're often a little crazy – but always full of joy, energy, and fun! Rotary Club of Gillingham Performance – 11th June 2024 We were delighted to be invited to perform for the Rotary Club of Gillingham, where our musicians gave an energetic and enthusiastic performance. Following our set, we were grateful to be presented with a generous donation of £1,500 to support our ongoing work. The event was a wonderful opportunity to showcase what we do and connect with local supporters. Festability Music Festival – 15th June 2024 Our debut at Festability (music festival specially designed for people with disabilities) was an absolute highlight of the year. We were thrilled to be asked to perform and our musicians lit up the main stage with a 40-minute set of upbeat songs and infectious energy. Sharing the day with other live bands and seeing the crowd dance and cheer filled us all with pride. It was a real milestone – the first of many festivals. Chatham Waters Summer Festival: Party on the Promenade – 11th July 2024 We were delighted to bring our music to the Chatham Waters Summer Festival. Against the backdrop of the River Medway, our performance added joy to a lively event full of summer fun. We're grateful to the organisers and to Cinq Ports for their donation in support of our project. Events like this help raise our profile and create new connections in the community. Summer Concert at St Matthew's Church Garden – 14th July 2024 Our annual summer concert was bathed in sunshine this year, held outdoors in the garden of St Matthew's Church. With musicians in sun hats, families relaxing in deckchairs, and a cream tea served afterwards, it was a quintessential summer's day, and a great way to end the academic year. Summer Social – 15th July 2024 This informal get-together gave us a chance to socialise and relax together after such a busy term. There was singing, dancing and plenty of laughter. These kinds of events are vital in building relationships and a sense of community. 'Summer Tunes and Treats' Pop-Up Coffee Shop (Gillingham) – 16th July 2024 We launched our first "Summer Tunes and Treats" coffee shop event at the Salvation Army on Green Street, Gillingham. People popped in throughout the day to enjoy live music, cake, tea and chat. 'Summer Tunes and Treats' Concert (Maidstone) – 18th July 2024 Our Maidstone musicians held their own coffee shop-style concert, giving friends, carers and families a chance to see what they'd been working on. Let Loose Gillingham High Street Performance – 26th July 2024 We enjoyed taking part in this annual 'Let Loose' outdoor music event in Gillingham High Street. Performing in public spaces helps challenge perceptions of disability, while bringing energy and inclusivity right into the heart of the community. Fundraising Events – August 2024 Two community events helped raise vital funds this summer. St Matthew's Church hosted a Cakes for Causes event, raising £215 for MMP Kent through delicious bakes and fellowship. Meanwhile, Medway Concert Brass kindly held a performance to support us, sharing their music and generosity with a shared goal – making music accessible for all. Visit from Bobby Cleall – September 2024 We were honoured to welcome Bobby Cleall, drummer from the Glenn Miller Orchestra, to a rehearsal. Bobby drummed along as we played our 1940s repertoire and shared stories from his musical journey. It was an inspiring visit and added a special sparkle to our practice session. Salute to the 40s at Chatham Historic Dockyard – 15th September 2024 Another great highlight for 2024 was performing on the main stage at the iconic Historic Dockyard for the popular "Salute to the 40s" weekend. Our musicians dressed the part and performed a specially arranged selection of 1940s songs. Sharing the bill with acts like the D-Day Darlings was a real honour and a big step forward for our public performance experience. Tunbridge Wells Open Afternoon (Cancelled) – 2nd October 2024 Unfortunately, despite interest from several groups in the area, our open afternoon at Tunbridge Wells Salvation Army had no sign-ups and was cancelled. While disappointing, it has given us useful insight as we explore expanding into new areas. We remain committed to growing the project in new regions. Quiz Night Fundraiser – 19th October 2024 Our quiz night brought together families, friends, and supporters for a fun evening of questions, prizes, and laughter. Fundraising events like these are vital in helping us continue our work while also strengthening the community that surrounds and supports our musicians. Visit from Come From Away (Pay It Forward 9/11) – 16th November 2024 As part of the "Pay It Forward 9/11" initiative, members from the Come From Away tour visited and gifted us a wonderful selection of percussion instruments, including sleigh bells, hand bells, and replacement drum heads. Their generosity was deeply appreciated and we will in turn 'pay it forward' in keeping with their ethos. Christmas Performance for MHS Supported Living – 26th November 2024 We gave a small, informal concert of Christmas songs for residents visiting our session from MHS Housing supported living schemes. Gillingham Christmas Lights Switch-On – 29th November 2024 A small group of our musicians helped kick off the festive season in Gillingham by performing at the Christmas Lights Switch-On. Lighting up the high street with some festive favourites helped create a joyful atmosphere for shoppers and families. Maidstone Christmas Concert – 5th December 2024 The Maidstone group Christmas performance was joined by the Maidstone Citadel Brass Band. The collaboration was joyful, and the event offered a chance for our musicians to share their talents in a more formal concert setting. Pantomime Trip: Little Red Riding Hood – 6th December 2024 30 MMP Kent musicians enjoyed our trip to the theatre for this year's panto at the Glass Box. Little Red Riding Hood was full of fun, colour and audience participation – a fun day out for our members. Tesco Collection (Grove Green) – 7th December 2024 We held a Christmas fundraising collection at Tesco Grove Green, supported by volunteers and musicians. These collections not only raise vital funds but also help promote awareness of our work within the community. Medway Christmas Concert with CRSO at Glassbox Theatre – 11th December 2024 A sell-out concert filled with festive spirit! Performing alongside the City of Rochester Symphony Orchestra, our musicians delivered an outstanding concert. Special moments included two of our members singing solo for the first time – a powerful and emotional milestone. Christmas Party – 17th December 2024 We ended the year with our much-loved Christmas Party, bringing together musicians, families, and carers from across all our sessions. Santa made a surprise visit, handing out sleigh bells, yellow Santa hats and chocolate! It was a joyful celebration of everything we'd achieved this year. A fitting end to the year. Remembering Peter Bassano – 4th February 2025 We were saddened to hear of the passing of Peter Bassano, Musical Director of the CRSO. Peter had worked closely with us for four years and was instrumental in creating our joint concerts. A kind, talented, and supportive friend of MMP Kent – he will be greatly missed. Donation from Union of Catholic Mothers – 17th February 2025 A surprise donation of £650 from the Union of Catholic Mothers was warmly received. Their support came out of the blue and reminded us of the kindness and generosity that surrounds our work. MMP Ambassadors Receive the King's Award for Voluntary Service – 20th March 2025 Sarah attended a very special presentation ceremony in Southend, celebrating the Music Man Project UK Ambassadors being awarded the King's Award for Voluntary Service – the highest award a voluntary group can receive in the UK. With a message from Michael Ball, attendance by Penny Mordaunt, and a certificate signed by King Charles III, it was a proud moment for all involved. Performances for Medway Housing Association – 7th/8th April 2025 Following the success of our Christmas collaboration, we performed across two days for residents supported by Medway Housing Association. These relaxed, daytime concerts provided entertainment and a sense of connection – especially important for those who may experience isolation. Medway Choir Festival (University of Kent) – 12th April 2025 We joined other choirs at the Medway Choir Festival at the Pilkington Building. Our group delivered an outstanding performance. The Mayor of Medway was in attendance and praised the joy we brought to the evening. Emily, one of our musicians, even celebrated her birthday by performing with us – a wonderful way to mark the day. Notable Highlights of the Year Our overall priority once again this year has been to continue to offer activities and accessible opportunities in music for people with learning disabilities. In doing so we hope to provide a place of belonging, promote community for those that are often socially excluded, and challenge misconceptions about what people with disabilities can do. We believe this is vital for developing a sense of identity and purpose; improving mental health and emotional well-being; alleviating stress and bringing hope and fulfilment through achievement and recognition.
The Music Man Project Kent recognises the vital role played by its stakeholders in shaping, supporting, and delivering inclusive music opportunities for people with learning disabilities. Our stakeholders include our performers (service users), their families and carers, care agencies and day services, our directors, staff and committee, local community centres and churches, our national parent organisation (The Music Man Project UK), and others who contribute to or benefit from our work – including donors, local groups, and media partners. To fulfil our objectives and ensure our services are responsive to the needs of our users, we prioritise strong, two-way communication with all stakeholder groups. Below is a summary of how we've engaged with them throughout the year: 1. Service Users (Performers/Musicians) Our performers remain central to all we do. We use a variety of communication methods to keep in touch, including face-to-face contact at weekly sessions, and online platforms such as WhatsApp, Messenger, Facebook, and text. These digital tools, first introduced during lockdown, remain an invaluable part of our communication strategy. Information about upcoming sessions, performances, and events is shared through flyers, newsletters, and online posts. For those who require additional support, we follow up with phone or FaceTime calls to ensure everyone receives updates in an accessible way. Our performers frequently offer feedback in person, online, or via their carers or family members. They regularly comment on what they enjoy, request favourite songs, and check details of upcoming activities – ensuring we deliver sessions that meet their interests and needs. 2. Care Agencies and Learning Disability Day Services Many of our performers attend as part of a day service or with a personal assistant or carer. Maintaining clear and ongoing dialogue with these stakeholders is essential to ensure high-quality support and participation. We continue to use our WhatsApp and Messenger groups to communicate with families, agencies, and care staff. These groups allow quick sharing of updates and also serve as a platform for feedback and idea-sharing. All agencies and carers are on our mailing list and receive regular updates, performance invitations, and key date reminders. In July and December, we held well-attended Coffee Morning Socials for parents and carers – providing an opportunity to connect, share feedback, and celebrate the achievements of our musicians. 3. Directors, Staff and Committee Our Music Man Project Kent Committee includes directors, staff, parents/carers, and representatives from community centres, churches, and local music groups. The committee meets quarterly to discuss developments, address challenges, and make decisions to guide our direction. These meetings are miniated and promote collaborative leadership. 4. Community Centres and Church Staff We are proud to work closely with several local venues, including St. Matthew's Church and Community Centre (Wigmore), Salvation Army Gillingham, and the Salvation Army Maidstone. These organisations host our weekly sessions and provide valued community links. We maintain open lines of communication with these partners through in-person meetings, phone calls, and email. This year, St. Matthew's Church invited our musicians to join their Sunday service and hosted our participation in fundraising events like "Cakes for Causes." Gillingham and Maidstone Salvation Army hosted our pop-up coffee shops, as well as continuing to work in partnership to deliver our "Enabled" church group. 5. The Music Man Project UK (National Organisation) As a Regional Partner Organisation of The Music Man Project charity, we work closely with the national team. MMP Kent shares in the national mission to make music accessible for all and collaborates on major events and projects. Our Regional Director is also a director of the national charity, ensuring strong communication and alignment. She has attended three national trustee meetings this year and maintains regular phone and email contact with CEO David Stanley. MMP Kent continues to contribute to national initiatives, including weekly MMP Zoom sessions, YouTube concerts, and other collaborative projects. 6. Other Stakeholders We actively include a wide range of third-party stakeholders in our communications and events. This includes supporters, community partners, and organisations interested in inclusive music and disability advocacy. Stakeholders receive newsletters and invitations to concerts and events. When possible, we also promote our work through KMTV, BBC Radio Kent, Kent Online, The NET, and social media (Facebook, YouTube). This year, we gave talks to community groups including Gillingham Rotary Club and Medway Housing Association, and performed widely in the local and regional community. These efforts not only share our work with a wider audience but also help us reach potential future beneficiaries and partners. 7. Donors and Charitable Supporters We are deeply grateful for the generous support of charitable funders and individual donors. Their contributions allow us to keep fees low and maintain the high quality of our provision. In this financial year, we received significant support from Kent Community Foundation (KCF), Gillingham Rotary Club, Union of Catholic Mothers, and Come From Away "Pay It Forward," as well as a couple of private donors. Communication with funders takes place primarily through email, phone calls, and grant application platforms. At the conclusion of funded periods, we submit monitoring reports and impact updates to demonstrate how funds have been used. What action, if any, has the company taken in response to feedback from its consultations? As a direct result of consultation with our stakeholders, we have: Continued online Zoom sessions that are open to the wider MMP UK network. Further developed our full-day 'Music School' option for more in-depth musical learning – this includes ukuleles, recorders, tuned percussion, composition, and notation. Participated in two high-profile community events in collaboration with partner organisations – Festability and Salute to the 40s. Organised four large-scale concerts (2 summer and 2 Christmas concerts), as well as several community performances, in response to popular demand.
