The company completed a business plan to acquire land at Bridestones Moor to establish a community-owned nature reserve. A crowdfunder was established, and grant applications were made to raise funds to purchase the land. Various fundraising events took place locally, including live music nights and an art auction. Over 100 volunteers joined the company to help in restoring and managing the site. Over 600 people from the local area contributed to the crowdfunder, and we secured support from several philanthropic lenders. The local community is very excited about the prospect of creating a local nature reserve that will be free to visit. It will offer many opportunities for education and other outdoor activities, with an emphasis on nature conservation. The site is a degraded blanket bog, but it has the potential to be restored by re-wetting the land. This will reduce the risk of wildfires and flooding in the valley below, which is presently a regular occurrence. Re-wetting the peatland habitat will lock in carbon, mitigating against climate change, and increase biodiversity for the community to enjoy. There will be other social impacts such as bringing people from diverse communities together to learn about nature, or take part in volunteering activities. We also plan to improve access to a broader range of people, including those with disabilities.
The company's stakeholders include everyone in the local community with an interest in the site, whether they visit regularly or plan to do so in the future. Additionally, they include those who wish to contribute to the restoration efforts as volunteers or have made donations towards acquiring and managing the site for nature conservation. At the outset of the project, we consulted widely with the community. We carried out an online survey to find out how people currently use the site (e.g., walking, fell-running, birdwatching, etc.) and what they would like to see happen in the future. To date, 588 people from the local area have completed the survey form. The feedback was analyzed, and we found overwhelming support for the project. 1. 97% favour nature recovery and conservation efforts 2. 85% view the site as essential for mental health and well-being 3. 86% support outdoor learning and youth engagement We will continue to collaborate with local conservation groups, schools, and environmental organizations to maximize public involvement and education.
