Company activities and impact

During the financial year February 2023 – February 2024, Makepeace Studios CIC delivered a range of activities aimed at improving health and well-being, promoting sustainable textile practices, and strengthening community cohesion. Key activities included: Skills Workshops: Taught sewing and textile skills to participants of all ages and abilities, with a focus on sustainable techniques such as mindful stitching, upcycling, darning, and working with natural fibres like cashmere. Nature-Based Dyeing Workshops: With funding from the Ashley Family Foundation, delivered 10 workshops for people with mental health needs. These sessions combined foraging for natural dye materials, extracting plant-based colours, and applying them to textiles, supporting both creative expression and well-being. Social Cohesion: The workshops brought participants together, fostering collaboration, connection, and a sense of community. Heritage and Research Projects: Began work on a project funded through a National Lottery Heritage Fund application, exploring botanical colour “the Redpath way,” which documents and develops traditional natural dye recipes for educational and community use.

Consultation with stakeholders

Makepeace Studios CIC considers the community of Pembrokeshire its primary stakeholder group. During the financial year, the organisation undertook extensive consultation with a wide range of community groups to shape and inform its activities. These included visits to the Tenby Friends Meeting Group, Kilgetty Craft Group, Cosherston WI, Picton WI, and the Association of Weavers, Spinners, and Dyers. Feedback forms were collected from over 60 community members, providing valuable insight that has directly influenced the design of workshops, events, and educational offerings. In addition to local groups, Makepeace Studios CIC has developed partnerships with key institutions, including the National Botanic Garden of Wales, People’s Collection Wales, Span Arts, Tenby Museum, and Narberth Museum. The organisation has also been working closely with PAVS (Pembrokeshire Association of Voluntary Services) and is now a member, further strengthening its engagement with the voluntary sector. Consultation has extended to community gardens such as Pencoed Community Garden and Cilrath Acre, helping to broaden the scope of practical, nature-based learning. Educational partnerships have also been developed with VC Saint Florence School to enhance and expand the CIC’s capacity to deliver sustainable textiles and craft education to younger audiences.
