Our surf school is dedicated to providing adaptive surf instruction to children with physical and mental disabilities, creating an inclusive and empowering environment where every child can experience the freedom and joy of surfing. Through specifically designed programs, trained instructors and customized equipment, we ensure that each child receives personalised support tailored to their unique needs and abilities. These activities have had a meaningful impact on the local community by promoting inclusion, wellness and confidence among children with disabilities. Parents and families have reported increased emotional wellbeing, social engagement and physical development in their children. Our programs also raise awareness of disability inclusion in sports, foster a culture of acceptance, and provide valuable volunteer opportunities that strengthen community bonds. Ultimately, the surf school serves as a safe, joyful and empowering space where children of all abilities can thrive.
Our stakeholders are the people who use our services, their families and support teams. We guide our sessions bottom-up by the people who use them, for example a lot of participants needed extra support in the water and were more comfortable with a familiar person present, so we have structured our sign-up form and lessons in a way that offers this option as a standard. A great deal of the adaptations we offer have developed through things our participants have asked for or shown a need for. With the help of funding this year we have greatly expanded our adaptive equipment, this includes beginning to add zips into our wetsuits, which began as an adaptation for people with limited mobility but has shown to be effective for people with sensory processing disorders, who struggle with the process of putting a wetsuit on. We’re now beginning to add zips into all of our wetsuits. One of the most common things we hear from people supporting children with disabilities is there isn’t enough activities like ours that support children who need extra support. This year we have frequently reached capacity on our sessions, so we have begun to offer more of them, group sessions with volunteer support, and other surf related activities to reach this population as frequently and with as diverse range of activities as possible. We have started working with more surf coaches with an interest or qualification in adaptive surfing, so we have a higher capacity to deliver enough adaptive surf to our participants. We have become more involved with para surfing this year (describing surfing for people with physical disabilities) and after acquiring a seated surfboard have left an open box for anybody signing up to expand on ‘any further adaptations we can make, to make their surfing experience as comfortable as possible’. From this question we have acquired a changing bed, the adaptive wetsuits and slide sheets, we are also collaborating with Beach Access North East to use, and assist in hiring out, their beach accessible wheelchairs and a changing area close to the beach. We are also working towards acquiring a larger seated surfboard to be able to provide surf sessions to larger children and adults who will benefit from one, and have changed our process for acquiring adaptive equipment so it can be utilised by as many people as possible.
