Our Chapels CIC has continued this year to work with the local authority to take on the management and regeneration of the two derelict chapels in Atherton Cemetery. In July they received a license from Wigan Council allowing the architects to get onsite and undertake the quinquennial survey and instruct a quantity surveyor to add the associated costings for the initial stages of repair and restoration of the buildings’ fabric. Our mission is directed by the community consensus that they want to see the chapels saved and put to community use. This objective is all subject to receiving relevant permissions, a successful asset transfer of the buildings and funding achieved to realise our ambitions. The CIC continue to consult to ensure their mission remains what the community want. Whilst paperwork, meetings and legalities have taken time this year, the CIC have held events to harness the community and demystify the cemetery space, cultivating future audiences for the chapels and also gaining further consultation. Attending community wide events, and our arranged Bat, Birdsong and Fungii walks have helped us to keep engaged with the community, fundraise and continue momentum, celebrating the natural heritage and consulting in the chapels at the same time.
