Company activities and impact

During the financial year of 2024-25, Downtown Pompey continued to grow and expand its reach throughout the city of Portsmouth. The key foci of the year were to plan larger upcoming projects and to ensure the successful fruition of projects ongoing from the previous year. In the early part of the year, the Queer Mapping project (started in Jan 2023) continued to grow. This was worked on by facilitators with various participants in free workshops. Later in the year, this project was paired with a local photographer to create the larger project ‘Tracing Safe/r Spaces’. This project engaged members of the LGBTQ+ community to discuss places in the city they felt were safe or safer. These participants were photographed and this was shared in an event in October, which over 80 people attended a local art gallery to celebrate the project. As part of our partnership commitment with New Theatre Royal Portsmouth on developing new and local audiences, we had delivered our ‘Sticky Floors & Palm Trees’ contemporary theatre show, exploring hyperlocal unexplored Heritage of Portsmouth nightlife culture. This show was a culmination of community and participatory work that took place during 2023. The show itself saw employment of 15 freelance performers, artists and professionals, support from 6 volunteers and witnessed by 200+ audience members. Following on from our Opal Nights event in April 2023, we began consultation focusing on a group that are often underrepresented at events in the city to create a showcase of stories for queer people of colour. This project was called Onyx Nights and was due to be performed in August. Consultation was successful but unfortunately the final show was unable to be performed. This is a project that will be revisited in the following financial year. The summer months saw a series of events take place. In June, Downtown Pompey worked with Portsmouth Pride to have performances on the Community Stage. Additionally, our first event of our large ‘Storming the Teacup’ project took place in August. Our Supper & Spice events brought together a wide variety of people from the local area to share food and conversation with people that may not usually cross paths. This event was very successful and led to a change in direction of part of the project: now being split into Taste, Sight and Sound projects to be delivered to targeted groups in the city. In October, we were approached by Portsmouth City Council to become partners in creating a video advertising and highlighting the local highstreet. This project would follow our model of consulting with the local community about what they loved about their high street and what they would like to see in the future. To facilitate this work, we moved into a unit in the local shopping centre in late December and started liaising with the community from January. The video was scheduled to be filmed in early April 2025. In December Downtown Pompey paired with a local book shop to run another ‘Day of Queer Joy’, on this day, local people were invited to come and have conversations with one another and create new local connections between individuals and with ourselves, as an organisation. Goody bags were given away to those who attended. Throughout the year, we have continued to work on our Heritage and Youth projects. In these projects we have connected with individuals to discuss local history and how lesser celebrated moments in Portsmouth’s history have large significance for many within the city. This continues to feed into our wider plans of creating an exhibition with the local museum. Our youth work continues to expand to work with local youth groups and schools.

Consultation with stakeholders

As part of our ethos, we continue to utilise our consultation model. For each project a mixture of 1-1 and group feedback was acquired; this was completed through various means of capture, including surveys and conversation. Our volunteer board remains in place with a focus on evaluation of processes and projects.
