I have been a key trainer on a recent 3-year programme of extensive training and development for a group of parents, carers and young people that was co-designed and led by individuals that have been disproportionally affected by poverty, austerity, structural inequalities and racial discrimination. To date, I have provided 20 parents with specialist training in Advocacy, Mental Health Awareness and self-healing through Reiki, to aid them to manage their well-being at crucial times of loss and trauma. I have created an evaluation tool to measure the impact of this and the findings from the initial pilot, funded by the Police and Crime Commissioners Violence Reduction Partnership, was overwhelmingly positive, with parents emphasising the necessity for specialist support groups to enable them to create a positive foundation from which to rebuild their lives. Similarly, I co designed and co lead an innovative youth inspectors programme which inspired and equipped young people to inspect services designed in their name, holding other services accountable. This has also led to significant improvements in services for young people and their communities. With a master’s degree in social work and the skills I have developed as a Youth and Community Worker, combined with the therapeutic healing methods I practice, I have a blend of knowledge and experience to facilitate a high level of trauma informed care to vulnerable children and the professionals that support them. As such, I have continued to provide advocacy and emotional support to the parents group as they have transitioned to becoming a Community Interest Company and therefore move from dependency to self-actualisation. I have been instrumental in actively promoting well-being initiatives within the wider Birmingham Childs Trust organisation, both amongst my colleagues and peers, and more importantly in service of our children and families. I have spearheaded the annual Well-Being Week for staff at the Trust for three years, providing key evaluation data for Human Resources, and I am currently writing a pilot programme for developing therapeutic, healing based interventions with Children in Care.
I have cultivated best practice rooted in tackling structural inequality through evidence-based reporting. My most recent appointment as Trainer, mentor and founding member of the Community Interest Research Centre (CIRC) is a unique initiative that has trained several cohorts of the most marginalised members of our society-migrant women-as community researchers. Participants have been mentored and supported to attain a Level 1 qualification in Community Research and have conducted vitally important research around Migrant maternity. I have supported the process of developing a matrix that enables thematic analysis of data from research findings. The purposes of which are to develop a maternity charter, that will include guiding principles of best practice and policy for health care professionals in the West Midlands area in the UK. I have been a part of the Empower U, Missing and Exploitation team at The Birmingham Childrens Trust since January 2020. I am a member of a multidisciplinary team, that supports young people and families impacted by Criminal and Sexual Exploitation and Serious Youth Violence. Safeguarding is central to my work in this role, and I routinely attend strategy meetings with partner organisations to develop safety plans for children at risk and share case studies for practice development.
As director of the CIC I received payment for delivery of training and workshops in line with the CIC's mission.
