Flint and Steel CIC provides activities for children, adults, families in Plymouth and the wider South West region who are interested in and would benefit from the Forest School and other nature connection activities at our local woodland site and around the city. Our mission is to support the residents and communities of Plymouth and the wider South West to discover their own unique connection to nature. The company is passionate about enabling access to nature for as many in the local and wider community as possible and this is achieved by running; family days, parents and toddler sessions, school visits at Poole Farm for primary and secondary aged children, school outreach where we go to them, a home education programme, holiday clubs in every school holiday, birthday parties, adult events, and community outreach events including provision of activities at festivals. FLINT AND STEEL CIC CLOSED AT THE END OF AUGUST 2024 AND DID NOT RUN ANY EVENTS OR TRADE AFTER THIS DATE. Our Values; - Supporting and empowering individuals to connect to nature - Promoting good environmental stewardship - Supporting local people and businesses - Being accessible to our community - Minimising our environmental impact During the period of October 2023- October 2024 the company has; - run 151 events which translates to 353.5 hours spent in the woods - had 915 engagements in the woods by local children, with 37 of these being free, fully-funded spaces for children eligible for free school meals. In addition, Flint and Steel CIC provided extensive opportunities for paid work for local people. The company’s activities have benefited the community by; - giving them an opportunity to access the beautiful woodland on their doorstep - providing a safe space for community and connection - offering free / subsidised spaces to help make our sessions as accessible as possible - being able to offer paid work for a variety of individuals - helping individuals to foster a deep and personal connection to this patch of woodland and to each other - shopping local and supporting as many independent Plymouth businesses as possible - inspiring all who attend about the importance of preserving this incredible space and going forward being environmental stewards. We want every child in Plymouth to be able to attend our sessions and seeking funding to remove financial barriers is an important part of this work. We have been lucky to receive funding from Plymouth City Council’s Sports Development Unit as part of their Fit and Fed holiday programmes. This has enabled us to offer free spaces at our full day holiday clubs to children eligible for benefit related free school meals. Spaces were also available to Looked After Children, Children with Educational Health Care Plans, Foster Children, Young Carers, children of recognised refugees and children from asylum-seeking families.
The company’s stakeholders are all those who attend our sessions, the parents/carers of the attendees, the staff who work at or run any of the establishments or locations where we run activities. We consult with our stakeholders in a variety of ways including; face to face casual conversations, anonymous online feedback forms, follow up emails and requests for feedback, and organised meetings. We use a variety of methods to consult our stakeholders as this suits the way we work with them. Individuals who attend are often very happy to give feedback face to face and this is how we gain information from children specifically by having conversations at the end of the session about what they enjoyed, what they didn’t enjoy, what they would like to do next time, how it made them feel etc. We send out feedback forms to parents / carers of children who attend, or attending adults, and these forms can be anonymous as we acknowledge that many may not feel comfortable sharing any other way. Online forms are a very helpful way of collating the information for future use. We find that we have gained valuable information about how our sessions have benefited those attending, how it has helped with confidence, self-belief, and self-worth, the importance of community and how our sessions allow people to experience things at their own pace and in their own way, helping everyone to feel calm and relaxed. Parents have told us how the funded spaces have helped them find a bit of peace and how this has benefited their mental health over the holidays. Single parents have told us how it has enabled them to work and allow their child to have fun, and also how it has helped them afford life over the holidays. This is invaluable feedback to us and we aim to carry on being able to provide this for as many as possible. We send requests via email for feedback from organisations we work with whether that is a school, a festival organiser or a community fair organiser. This allows us to understand anything we could change about what we offer. We also arrange meetings with the staff at Poole Farm (where we fun the majority of our activities) to regularly consult with them about how it is all going, if they are happy with what we are doing, if there is anything we need to discuss with them etc. This allows for a smooth working relationship.
