Consultation with the internship group was held. Representative sample responses of personal reflections of the benefits of participation are listed below: “Clarity comes from direct engagement, not just thought alone, and the UK national Committee on China (UKNCC) offers the platform to do both. Serving on the UKNCC enables me to build the network, knowledge, and exposure to understanding China in many guises. Here, I am actively building the durable foundations to pursue my professional purpose to: Connect Europe with Asia and through Data and Diplomacy from the business, technology, and data intersection. In return, I am able to contribute meaningfully towards something that I strongly advocate; China is a strategic priority for Britain. The UK National Committee on China is among the rare-breed organisations who can drive positive change through the power of young people. From my personal experiences, I have received unparalleled access to seasoned China experts spanning Business, Government, and Academia who have offered hands-on support and mentorship at an arms reach. Furthermore, building durable networks with the UKNCC’s growing talent pipeline of high-calibre University graduates and Young Professionals is cultivating the next generation of future-leaders who are equipped to navigate the complexities of the twenty-first century. This derives from their ability to understand China, and not reject China because rejecting China is rejecting knowledge - the cornerstone for global development. Throughout my tenure, the UKNCC has provided me with opportunities to pursue my purpose on many fronts. For example, supporting track-two diplomacy initiatives by hosting Chinese investors and business leaders build durable partnerships with The University of Nottingham to support The UK and China Medical Alliance. Furthermore, enrich my understanding on contemporary Chinese developments through participating in executive seminars with Andrew Cainey’s Xiconomics: What China’s Dual Circulation Strategy Means for Global Business course. That said, only by understanding joining the UKNCC could I understand these prominent dynamics that inspired my first-class dissertation “An Analysis of China’s Digital Economy advancing Common Prosperity Under Xi Jinping’s Political Thought (2013-2023).” Looking ahead, I'm confident that the network, knowledge, and exposure that the UKNCC has provided me, equips me with the durable foundations that will serve me well to pursue my purpose.” “Between 2023 and 2024 I gained invaluable experience as an intern at the UK National Committee on China, contributing across many projects supporting key UKNCC objectives and targets. During this period, my roles included desk research, data collection, analysis and visualisation. I also worked directly with the CEO to help initiate the internal launch of UKNCC’s flagship 2025 project, the Pathfinder Dialogue on AI. Additionally, my long tenure at the UKNCC equipped me with the tools to assist in the onboarding of new interns, reflecting the comprehensive experience of core UKNCC functions I have gathered during my time at the organisation. Key contributions: Data collection, visualisation & analysis: A large part of my work during this period was focused on data collection, analysis and visualisation. Supporting UKNCC’s research and partnership network, expanding capabilities for future projects. I built a database, mapped potential collaborators and partners for the UK-China Medical Alliance project, and engaged in network science to build a visualisation of UK activity in China and China adjacent research areas. This research assisted UKNCC fundraising goals and supported the health of core projects. Operations experience: I have had the opportunity to gain plentiful experience in operations during my time at UKNCC. Part of my role in data collection and analysis was maintaining consistency and accuracy across datasets, contributing to a standardisation of data hygiene practices across the organisation. On top of this, I assisted the CEO in the internal launch of UKNCC’s Pathfinder Dialogue on AI project, a collaborative process involving the scoping out of necessary tools and platforms required to successfully deliver a large, physical exhibition in China. Broad experience: Working with UKNCC’s team has been a rare privilege to work alongside some of the most experienced professionals in the industry, I have benefited from direct and indirect mentorship across senior members of UKNCC’s team that has supported a transition from a life focused on the academic experience to professional experience. The dynamic management structure UKNCC operates on prepares me for any, and all kinds of professional cultures I may come across in my career.” Regular engagement with the UKNCC Advisory Board took place throughout the year through team and individual meetings. The UKNCC Advisory Board confirmed at each meeting their satisfaction with progress and plans. A delated survey was conducted of UKNCC CIC Executive Education alumni. 88% of alumni ranked UKNCC CIC education as “World-Class” and 98% “free from political bias”.
Andrew Cainey received £5,500 for delivering executive education training to HMG. Winnie King received £4,500 for delivering executive education training to HMG. Ollie Shiell received £20,950 for serving as full time Chief Executive over the year.
