COMMUNITY INTEREST ANNUAL REPORT

UNICHEF, THE NATIONAL CHEFS UNION CIC

Company Number: 11698416 (England and Wales)

Year Ending: 30 November 2024

Company activities and impact

During the financial year, Unichef CIC has continued to deliver measurable benefits to the UK’s professional chef community, aligning with our founding objective of improving working conditions, mental health awareness, and vocational representation for culinary professionals. Key community benefits provided in the year include: Direct Employment and Tribunal Support: We assisted numerous chefs facing unfair dismissal, workplace discrimination, and mental health-related challenges, helping them navigate employment law, submit tribunal claims, and achieve successful outcomes. Mental Health Advocacy: We continued to raise awareness around heat stress, anxiety, and stress-related disorders within kitchens. We provided signposting and informal support to chefs struggling with mental health, reinforcing our early commitment to embed wellbeing in the core of our operations. Educational Resources and Campaigning: Through our online platforms, we disseminated industry-specific information on rights at work, apprenticeships, ethical recruitment, and fair pay. This included free-to-access guides and practical information tailored to hospitality professionals. Vocational Representation: We served as a voice for chefs who would otherwise lack representation. By being non-political and chef-led, we bridged the gap between traditional trade unionism and the modern hospitality workforce. Inclusivity and Community Engagement: We maintained a platform welcoming chefs of all backgrounds, including young apprentices, migrants, women, and neurodiverse workers, groups often underrepresented in hospitality. Sustainability and Resilience: Unichef has operated within its means without debt, using member subscriptions solely to reinvest in support services, legal access, and awareness campaigns, demonstrating community-first values and financial stewardship. Unichef’s activities continue to build community resilience within one of the UK’s most pressured sectors. Through a combination of advocacy, individual support, education, and industry leadership, we remain committed to supporting chefs’ rights, wellbeing, and future employability.
