THE DRACUME COMPANY CIC

Directors' report period ended 30 November 2024

The directors present their report with the financial statements of the company for the period ended 30 November 2024

Principal activities of the company

The Dracume Company CIC is a company focused on uplifting emerging creatives and artists within the LGBTQ+ community. This year we produced two new plays by queer and emerging writers using creative teams from both these communities. Additionally we produced a large scale new writing festival, working with over eighty emerging creatives to stage nine new plays. During the end of this financial year we began the process of professionalising away from our student theatre roots and towards a level of organisation and quality that would fit the standard required to apply for arts funding and corporate investment opportunities.

Company activities and impact

The Dracume Company CIC is a performing arts company that strives to support emerging theatre makers and LGBTQ+ artists. It focuses on commissioning new plays and hosting The Gateway New Writing Festival as a means to widen access and provide substantive opportunities for developing artists. The company began operations in November 2022. During the financial year 2023-2024, Dracume has benefited our community in the following ways: - We commissioned two plays from emerging LGBTQ+ writers. - Firstly, the Spilling cup which is an intimate, compassionate and angry play surrounding a woman's struggle with Endometriosis. It talks to the realities of living with a chronic illness, one that is deeply misunderstood and stigmatised by society, one that can be both empowering, hilarious and devastating. Spilling Cup which is largely autobiographical critiques a culture in which women's health is downplayed, periods are seen as shameful and education is lacking and seeks to start a conversation both educating audiences while connecting and validating those. - Secondly, Monogamy Musings described as cutting-edge and aimed at entertaining honest conversations about monogamy, relationships, queerness and sex, we seek to encourage one another to think in nuance as opposed to absolute truths and move towards sincere, open dialogue. The play follows three characters as they navigate their individual experiences and beliefs around relationships. Far from being moralistic, this play invites the audience to question their own wiring and beliefs about platonic, romantic and sexual love. Dracume created significant opportunity for these, just out of university, writers to tell deeply personal stories close to their hearts surrounding issues that are often stigmatised. These productions additionally provided around 15 emerging creatives with paid theatre work as a result of Dracumes work. Furthermore, The Spilling Cup went on to perform a short run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and partnered with hey girls and EndometriosisUK to distribute free period products and information on endometriosis. We also invested in a period simulator which we used on willing members of the public. This helped to raise awareness and reduce stigma surrounding periods and endometriosis. - Dracume successfully delivered it's second edition of The Gateway Writing Festival. We worked with over 80 emerging early career artists to stage nine new plays at the Scottish Storytelling Centre. We managed to reach our largest audience yet and helped to develop and platform excellent, diverse and boundary pushing theatre.

Consultation with stakeholders

- Dracume's stakeholders are the artists it supports. The founders of the company are queer emerging theatre makers and this is where the purpose of our company grew from. Our company policy requires a reflective review after each project. The following is the method of consultation, the feedback received and the actions we took after consultation. The Spilling Cup: Individual verbal consultation. - Generally the feedback was positive and was described as a useful and valuable opportunity. However, some stakeholders discussed how they felt the company required some clearer organisation. Additionally, the importance of accessibility surrounding every aspect of the show was requested. - moving forward from this feedback we instituted the use of an access statement for every production and began the creation of our company access policy. Additionally, the company began to consider ways of professionalising and despite it's small size we began researching regularly funded arts organisations to see how we could begin to operate at a highly organised level. Monogamy Musings: Group verbal consultation. - The feedback for this project was overwhelming positive, with conversations surrounding taking the project further and to a possible fringe run taking place. Once again the issue of clear organisation and professional management arose and as this project coincided with The Spilling Cup we took this feedback on board and doubled our efforts mentioned above in relation to creating an industry standard organisational structure. The Gateway Writing Festival: Online form consultation. - The feedback from this project was centred on the projects value as a stepping stone for many creatives and the high level of development it provided. There was also some feedback surrounding the lack of community formation around such a large team. - Moving forward we decided to focus on creating a community and have contracted a member of staff with a brief surrounding creating Gateway community events, internal performance and feedback nights and a post festival mixer/ party.
