The Belfast Intercultural Romanian Community (BIRC) supports the Romanian-speaking community in Northern Ireland by providing free educational, cultural, civic, and informational services. During the financial year 2024–2025, the organisation’s activities have benefited the community in the following ways: over 20,000 Romanian residents with the right to live and work in the UK have been supported through free services and community outreach four Saturday Schools have been run in Belfast, Armagh, Portadown, and Ballymena, helping children with at least one Romanian parent to learn about their cultural roots and practise the Romanian language through informal activities Romanian citizens were able to exercise their democratic rights during the European Parliamentary, Parliamentary, and Presidential elections, with BIRC members serving as heads of polling stations in Belfast, Portadown, and Ballymena the organisation acted as a bridge between the Romanian Consulate in Edinburgh, the Romanian Embassy in London, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and local authorities in Northern Ireland, ensuring the dissemination of official information to reduce misinformation through partnerships with UK organisations, members of the community have been informed about post-Brexit employment rights, legal access to the labour market, and the risks of labour exploitation and modern slavery campaigns against fake news and disinformation on social media have reduced misinformation in the Romanian community by over 60%, protecting vulnerable groups from manipulation the organisation highlighted the dangers of social media manipulation by providing context about the annulment of Romania’s presidential election on 6 December 2024, caused by coordinated online disinformation campaigns members of the community have had the opportunity to celebrate their heritage through participation in local cultural festivals and the organisation of Romania’s National Day events BIRC members have undertaken training and professional development, ensuring greater professionalism in delivering services, with all activities achieved through voluntary efforts
