SPYSQUAD HQ CIC produce and provides a range of immsersive educational products and services to children and young people ages 9+. Our local work experience in creative careers, and experience from workshops in game design and development, provide a much needed service for local Cornish youth that support and develop critical thinking, problem solving, emotional intelligence and resilience, and allow students to gain industry specific transferable skills. During 2023-2024 we worked with over 35 students to help them gain structured work experience in creative industry careers, including 30+college students (December 2023-February 2024) and 5 university interns (October-November 2024) Our work addressed critical work placement shortage for under-18 students in Cornwall's creative sector, where legal restrictions can prevent access to suitable placements that are IP heavy within the creative media and game design sector. One student with confidence and mental health challenges discovered leadership abilities after being assigned a team leader role, subsequently excelling and gaining self-awareness about their capabilities, along with a range of leadership specific transferable skills. 5 university interns developed experience working with private client brief unavailable through their degree course, learning to translate technical concepts for non-technical stakeholders, manage their time effectively in line with budgets constraints, and got to see the whole process from concept to finished product. Our work has enabled a systematic analysis of neurodivergent student needs across placement data identified consistent support gaps, leading to development of a new specialist EHCP services launching in 2025 Research findings contributed to policy discussions around disabled student employment transitions, aligning with House of Lords "Think Work First" report recommendations.
COMMUNITY IMPACT AND ACTIVITIES We have continued developing potential new partnerships, covering the local Cornish careers services, more education institutions, (secondary schools, colleges, alternative educational provisions, and universities), the local authority, other local CIC’s and GCHQ outreach team at Bude. These new relationships will continue to be nurtured into 2025, to help raise awareness of our work experience service, our outreach programs, and will allow SPYSQUAD HQ CIC to consider joint grant funding applications/joint bids with other complimentary cic's.
