The company runs the Barry War Museum and Heritage Centre, a small independent museum situated in the historic Barry Island Railway Station building. The museum is run by a group of unpaid local volunteers and has been operating for some 12 years. We have recently become a C.I.C. in order to negotiate as a legal entity with the new landlords, Transport for Wales. During the financial year 2023 - 2024, the museum has benefited the community of Barry by opening, free of charge, to commemorate local people both in peace time, and times of war. We have held events to commemorate V.E. Day, V.J. Day and Armistice Day, to name but a few. We also run a series of evening talks by various speakers on a diverse range of subjects for all members of the public to attend, all free of charge. The museum does not just cover wartime topics, we also tell the story of the heritage and development of the town of Barry from Roman and Medieval Times, and especially about the development of its Docks and Railways throughout Victorian times and up to the present date.
We regularly hold consultations with our landlords Transport for Wales, who are in support of our operation and wish to partner with us as one of their community hubs. We regularly consult with the Barry Town Council, and the Vale of Glamorgan Council, and also representatives of the Welsh Government and the local Member of Parliament, all of whom have attended not just various meetings with us, but also some of our events held at the museum. We have hosted, and supported the Rotary Club in some of their events, we have also hosted and supported various Veterans Groups, including the Royal British Legion. We also host several local Primary Schools throughout the year who bring their year 6 classes to the museum where they are told about life on the 'home front' during the Second World War and the evacuation experiences, as this subject is part of the school curriculum. All feedback so far has been positive.
