Notes to the Financial Statements

for the Period Ended 28 February 2025

  • 1. Accounting policies

    Basis of measurement and preparation

These financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the provisions of Section 1A (Small Entities) of Financial Reporting Standard 102

    Turnover policy

Turnover is measured at the fair value of the consideration received or receivable, net of discounts and value added taxes. Turnover includes revenue earned from the sale of goods and from the rendering of services. Turnover from the sale of goods is recognised when the significant risks and rewards of ownership of the goods have transferred to the buyer. Turnover from the rendering of services is recognised by reference to the stage of completion of the contract. The stage of completion of a contract is measured by comparing the costs incurred for work performed to date to the total estimated contract costs.

    Tangible fixed assets depreciation policy

Musical instruments are capitalised at cost. The director considers that these assets have indefinite useful life and, as such, no depreciation is charged. The carrying values are reviewed annually to assess whether there is any indication of impairment. Where impairment is identified, the asset is written down to its recoverable amount.

Company activities and impact

We delivered brass lessons to more than 325 primary school pupils across 22 state schools in the Southwest during the year. Our programme develops musical skills, confidence, and teamwork in young learners, supporting both their educational progress and personal growth. Beyond the classroom, the lessons provide a positive creative outlet, encourage discipline and perseverance, and help build a sense of achievement. Many pupils go on to join local ensembles and perform at school concerts and public events, sharing live music with their communities and enriching local cultural life. By nurturing the next generation of brass players, BandStars CIC also supports the sustainability of community music-making and contributes to the UK’s rich musical tradition.
