The Neighbourhood Bee Corridor Community Interest Company supports the residents of West Polsloe in Exeter, of St John’s Road EX1 2HR and the surrounding streets, facilitating social interaction and encouraging the greening of our streets. In the past year we have held the following events: August/September Student Welcoming. Door-to-door introductions, supplying leaflets and information to new students and residents about the community. New residents are encouraged to join the WhatsApp group, follow the recycling and rubbish collection guidelines, and get involved. The area is safer and happier when people know each other, and more likely to care about keeping the streets clean and safe. October Pumpkin festival. We held a pumpkin competition, and those who wanted to welcomed local families for trick-or-treating. December Living Advent Calendar. A different household decorates their window and the neighbours gather each evening for an ‘opening’, like an advent calendar. The community benefited from getting to know each other with mince pies / drinks, fostering good will and spreading season’s greetings. May Great West Run ‘Cheering Station’. The Exeter Great West Half-Marathon route runs past the end of St John’s Road, and we set up a cheering station for the neighbourhood to come and cheer on the runners on with music, noise makers, and posters. We had a party atmosphere with snacks for the onlookers and a bubble machine. More people stayed to cheer on and have fun. June Yard Sale Trail. An event where lots of houses in the area put out their items for sale, like a yard sale, on our front paths to make one big yard sale to walk around. People enjoyed meeting their neighbours, buying and selling goods, recycling and reducing waste. July Food bank collections. 45 kg of food was collected for St Petrock’s, our local homelessness charity. Food has been noted as being wasted every year when students move out of their shared houses in our neighbourhood, and binned from their cupboards and freezers. We encourage them to donate unwanted food instead, by volunteering to collect the food and take it to St Petrock’s. Every month throughout the year: Ladies’ Book Club. A book group is held at the local pub monthly as a social event. Around 200 households in the West Polsloe area of Exeter benefit from the CIC.
Stakeholders consulted: Members of the St Johns Road Ladies book club Residents (families) Landlords of the student houses on St Johns Road Students Talks are held both formally and informally with the above stakeholders about the CIC's activities. A WhatsApp group chat is used for quick questions / answers. A door-knocking exercise is held annually. Feedback is welcomed and we will act accordingly. For example, we received a lot of positive feedback congratulating us on the success of our Great West Run 'cheering station' this year, but also included suggestions for next year, such as the positioning of music, more advertising and provision of chairs.
