Gwyr Community Land Trust (GCLT) was set up and is run entirely by local people who are in housing need and who are committed to finding a solution to the lack of affordable housing in the Gower and Gower Fringe area where we live, work, volunteer and where our children goto school. It intends to use a community-led and community-built approach to create 14 zero-carbon, genuinely affordable homes in the Gower Fringe area, west of Swansea, for local people in housing need. The shared-ownership homes will be high-quality, sustainable and suitable for future generations. GCLT believes that housing which is initiated, designed and built by the community will create homes which improve local areas for everyone. An alternative approach to developer-led housing will create a new model of development which puts communities in the driving seat. During this third year of GCL T we have spent time: Building our relationships with local stakeholders, businesses, residents, local councillors, AM/PMs and our Local Authority. GCLT has now strong support from local people, local ward councillors, Welsh Government and Cwmpas (formally Wales Cooperative Centre). Working alongside Cwmpas to look at funding streams to support community led housing in Wales. Building our mailing list and social media accounts to continue having the relevant conversations with a wider community. Launching our new website. Sending out frequent newsletters to share to share our journey, learnings and encourage our local community to feedback their thoughts and ideas to us. Upskilling, training and working closely with partner organisations. Our members have enjoyed training in core skills - finance, renewable energy, conflict resolution, design, decision making, sociocracy etc. Attending local housing network forums in order to stay informed of co-production and the bigger picture of housing needs in the area. Sourcing funding, especially to support our volunteer members to manage childcare and support costs associated with additional-needs and caring roles. Many members would otherwise be excluded without this crucial support. Educating and informing our audiences regarding community-led housing and cooperative principles. Organising social activities for our members and linking up with other co-housing and community-led organisations with similar aims. Working with land owners to organise an extending options agreement on the land. Working with our membership to develop our design and co-housing ideas. Recruiting new families to join our membership. Developing our core policies. Peer-to-peer support with housing issues and in general supporting our membership, creating hope that we can create a genuine, supportive and cohesive community for ourselves and our local area. Members have attended and spoken at various events across the housing sector to let them know about our project and the work we are undertaking Holding Visioning Weekends for our members to discuss and develop ideas around design, co-housing, community living, where our members can get to know one another, be creative, feel supported, build motivation and inspire the project's development.
GCL T is committed to working in partnership with a range of stakeholders to realise our aim of community-led housing. It is equally aware that this project is reliant on the support and engagement of our 'community' which includes local people, professionals, statutory, private, third sector and grassroots organisations in the geographical area within which it intends to develop its site. Now we have a site we have been working towards developing plans and letting the public know of the developments and how they can get involved this has involved several community in person consultations alongside a social media campaign to get views on community led housing within the area, what people would like to see the land used for . Online - GCLT has an active social media presence on Facebook and Twitter and a significant online following with good engagement and a website which is regularly updated. We link in with local community groups within our catchment area to develop a fluid mechanism for feedback and conversation regarding the development of our project.
