Becoming Unchained delivers creative programmes that use storytelling, performance, and writing to support the personal development and rehabilitation of individuals with experience of the criminal justice system. Over the reporting period, we ran weekly creative writing and storytelling workshops in HMP Wormwood Scrubs with 20 men, culminating in performances at Unchained Nights alongside community-based artists. We also worked in HMP Maidstone, a foreign national prison, running sessions for 15 men in collaboration with the National Literacy Trust, with a focus on writing messages to loved ones. In the community, we supported nine individuals (eight men and one woman) over a six-month programme involving regular creative sessions and mentoring. Six participants completed the full engagement, which ended in a live public performance with a professional band. Two of the participants have since developed business plans to present to external stakeholders at an upcoming Unchained away day. Becoming Unchained also provides experience and placements for aspiring professionals. Two criminology and psychology students volunteered with us, gaining their first hands-on experience in prison environments. We are now a referral charity for Greenwich University, with final-year students preparing to start placements with us. Our work supports creative self-expression, builds confidence, and helps individuals develop transferrable life skills, supporting rehabilitation, desistance from crime, and long-term reintegration into society. Lastly, we received funding from Baobab Foundation which funded Unchained Nights 2025, a workshop based project involving various participants with lived-experiences within the criminal justice system. Participants attended weekly workshops which lead to a final live performance.
We actively consult with participants and stakeholders throughout our work. Feedback is gathered during and after workshops and performances, helping us to understand participants’ needs and adjust our delivery accordingly. For example, we incorporated more live performance elements in response to participants’ enthusiasm for showcasing their work publicly. We maintain regular dialogue with prison education staff, community partners, and collaborating organisations such as the National Literacy Trust to ensure our work aligns with the needs of those we serve. In developing new initiatives, such as the Unchained away day and business planning support, we consulted directly with participants to ensure the offer matched their ambitions. Our partnership with Greenwich University was established through mutual consultation to provide meaningful placement opportunities that also meet academic and professional development objectives. This two-way engagement ensures that our programmes remain relevant, impactful, and participant-led.
