The Social Innovation Partnership “TSIP” Labs CIC hosted one project in 2024 “Young Black Mental Wealth”. Young Black men tend to fare worse than their peers across multiple domains, including mental health outcomes, educational achievement, criminal justice involvement, and employment opportunities. These disparities are rooted in systemic racism, socioeconomic inequalities, and cultural stigmas surrounding mental health. In response, City and Hackney Population Health Hub provided funding through the embedding health equity (MATCH) programme to develop anti-racist commissioning approaches. TSIP Labs CIC, as a newly established Community Interest Company, was positioned to lead this innovative project, bringing expertise in participatory research and co-design methodologies. TSIP worked with young Black men to introduce long-term solutions to the challenges identified in the programme and strengthen young Black men’s agency by increasing the potential for more decision-making opportunities, innovative and collaborative ideas, as well as more accountable driven efforts.
Stakeholders for the Young Black Mental Wealth project were young Black men in Hackney, who were consulted through workshops, “talk and eat” sessions and training sessions. A number of challenges and solutions were identified throughout the programme and TSIP CIC ultimately supported participants in designing long-term plans to address mental health inequalities faced by young Black men in Hackney through community-led, culturally responsive approaches. By centering lived experience and employing innovative co- design methodologies, the project has demonstrated promising outcomes while identifying important challenges and learning.
