The purpose of The Cloud Crew is to act as a catalyst and a coordinator, bringing together technology and volunteering to create.positive social impact. Our beneficiaries are: 1. Charities - we support charities to drive value from technology. We provide pro-bono technical support to implement new technologies that will help charities to become more efficient and visible. 2. Unemployed people- we provide industry mentoring and work experience placements to unemployed people that have gained technical skills, but have not yet secured a paid role. We particularly seek people from under-represented backgrounds and low socioconomic communities. Since 27th June 2024, 192 individual unemployed and underemployed volunteers have registered on the community hub, seeking volunteer work experience placements with The Cloud Crew CIC. In November 2024, we ran a one-day Hackathon on behalf of Barnardo's to provide diversity of thought on how Al technologies could make their donations-to-sale process more efficient and profitable. The event was supported by volunteers from industry and unemployed volunteers. The day created four presentations containing multiple ideas, showing Barnardos how to take their product forward. Over the next few months, we will have more volunteers working on the product development of the ideas. The result will see more of the donated items being routed to sale in their shops and on-line, far quicker. These donations make up about a third of Barnardo's running costs and so increasing this revenue will mean that they can serve more beneficiaries as a charity. The event also provided invaluable work experience for 50 unemployed volunteers. Post-event valuation demonstrated that 100 percent of participants felt more confident in running technical projects as a result of the event and have experience to discuss in their interviews. We also have a team of volunteers implementing a customer relationship management platform, Salesforce, for non-profit Wigton Youth Station. The implementation will provide a free system for the charity to manage their service users, their suppliers and their activities. They will be able to move to an automated process to take registers, to evaluate their activities and to receive new sign-ups from their website. They will also have data more easily available to complete funding applications. The work of The Cloud Crew will mean that the small number of staff at Wigton Youth Station can spend less time on administration and more time with the users of their service. The Cloud Crew has completed one series of industry mentoring for sixteen unemployed people. Each person received at least six, one-hour 1 to 1 mentoring with a dedicated industry mentor. This helped with career coaching, career planning, professional skills coaching and the sharing of industry expertise. Measurement demonstrated that the beneficiaries were more confident in entering into a technical career as a result of the time spent being mentored. The Cloud Crew delivered six professional skills webinars to unemployed people. The topics covered Problem Solving, Empathy, Active Listening, Creative Thinking, CV Building and Emotional Intelligence. The sessions are held virtually, which means that the sessions are accessible to all.
The Cloud Crew has consulted with stakeholders from both private and public sector. Charities: we have consulted with our charity partners, Barnardo's and Wigton Youth Station to understand how charities could benefit from greater technology usage. The Cloud Crew director also attended events such as Movement to Work's Youth Employability Awards and the Corporate Charity Partnership event, to meet more charitable organisations in one setting, to gain broader insights and connections. Founder and CEO, Claire Spiller has been actively taking part in Digital Inclusion forums, workshops and discussions. Claire attended the launch of the FutureDotNow research paper in April 2025, gaining insights on the lack of digital skills across the UK. Claire also attended a round table at The House of Lords, where leaders from the technology industry, public sector corporate organisations and government shared their knowledge, experience and thoughts on how to tackle digital poverty. Claire is a member of the UK Digital Skills Council. Stakeholders from the education industry are also important to our organisation. We have consulted with Westminster Adult Education Services and Primed Talent, to understand why people that have been re-skilled are still unemployed. The lack of work experience on a CV is a consistent issue when trying to secure a job interview. For people from low socio-economic backgrounds, a lack of a professional network is an issue. As a result, we combine volunteers that have already started their technical careers, to volunteer alongside, and to mentor our unemployed volunteers.
