Survive and Thrive suicide prevention courses: Training volunteers to spot the signs of suicide risk and connect people to help. COMMUNITY INTEREST ANNUAL REPORT

HUMANS BEING (YORKSHIRE) CIC

Company Number: 10990560 (England and Wales)

Year Ending: 31 December 2024

Company activities and impact

Humans Being CIC is a group of people in Leeds starting a new conversation about gender and mental health, hoping to change the way we approach wellbeing and recovery. Our overall aim is to facilitate the empowerment of vulnerable people to improve their wellbeing through courses, workshops and other activities that explore and challenge gender role stereotypes and expectations. This is a user-led project. We have survived, and continue to experience the impacts of gender stereotyping in our own lives through mental ill-health, loneliness, eating disorders, sexual abuse, addiction, suicide and domestic violence. We are also experienced mental wellbeing practitioners from established, grass-roots, wellbeing organisations. PRINCIPAL ACTIVITY During this year (2024), we facilitated 28 courses and over 30 workshops, working directly with more than 400 members of our community. These included asylum seekers, HIV positive women, isolated men, mental health service users, food bank and community support volunteers, healthcare staff, single mums, older people and women dealing with complex and acute mental health issues. This year, our courses and workshops included: - Switch on to Women's Safety Workshops: These workshops gave staff the skills to run 'active bystander' training with their male staff or students; - Navigator Men's Wellbeing Courses: Seven-week courses that enabled isolated men to start taking steps towards a happier and healthier life; - Unfolding Volunteer Wellbeing Courses: Front-line volunteers learned to create boundaries and support themselves while they support others; - Heads, Hearts and Hands art therapy courses: Courses supporting women with complex mental health needs to explore and express their wellbeing through art and discussion; - Survive and Thrive suicide prevention courses: Training volunteers to spot the signs of suicide risk and connect people to help; - First Contact Workshops: A workshop for front-line volunteers who want better ways of supporting the vulnerable people they come into contact with; - Confidence to Challenge Workshops: Training third sector volunteers and staff to find ways to challenge discriminatory behaviour with empathy and sensitivity.

Consultation with stakeholders

Community consultation included our regular Thinking and Planning focus group meetings, where we listened to more than 30 people dealing with these issues, and feedback from more than 150 people who have attended our previous courses. Key themes identified by the women were: connecting with others, building confidence, and gradually expanding comfort zones. Other major concerns were the current mental health crisis, with the cost-of-living crisis hitting women the hardest, and record numbers on waiting lists for mental health support.
