GREEN CIRCLE NATURE REGENERATION CIC COMMUNITY INTEREST COMPANY – ANNUAL STATEMENT Our Social Mission: To improve nature by restoring polluted waterways, enhancing biodiversity of green spaces, and protecting the environment for future generations of wildlife and people. To connect people with nature through hands-on environmental experiences and inclusive education, especially engaging individuals from diverse backgrounds who may not traditionally access or feel welcome in natural spaces. Our work continues to be rooted in the belief that nature restoration and community engagement go hand in hand. Over the past year, we have deepened our impact through targeted projects that deliver both ecological and social benefits. We worked with ex-offenders for eight months on a major clean-up of polluted waterways in Leicester, removing nearly three metrictonnes of waste. This initiative not only improved the health of the river but also provided environmental training and meaningful outdoor work, helping participants build skills and reconnect with nature in a constructive and restorative way. It also fostered positive interactions with young offenders, offering a pathway to rehabilitation through purposeful engagement. We also delivered nature experience days for young people outside mainstream education. These immersive sessions introduced participants to the River Soar’s ecological value and offered hands-on experiences such as fire building, outdoor cooking, and camping. These activities sparked curiosity, built confidence, and helped young people feel a sense of belonging in green spaces, many for the first time. Our collaboration with the University of Leicester continued to flourish. We supported academic research that contributed to journal publications, media articles (i.e. in the BBC TV, Radio, website, Daily Mail, Yahoo News, Guardian and many more and media across the globe) provided data for a completed PhD thesis, and helped educate Master’s students on river pollution and restoration. This partnership strengthens the scientific foundation of our work and ensures our efforts are both evidence-based and impactful. Looking ahead, we remain committed to our core mission. While our work in Leicester City continues, our primary focus has nowshifted to Fosse Meadows Country Park, where we have secured a 20-year lease in partnership with Blaby District Council. This long-term commitment allows us to undertake large-scale restoration of woodland and meadow habitats, improve biodiversity, and create inclusive opportunities for people to connect with nature. By transforming Fosse into a vibrant hub for ecological education and community engagement, we aim to foster a deeper sense of place, pride, and wellbeing among local residents, ensuring that nature is not only preserved but actively experienced and celebrated. We have already begun running educational events at Fosse Meadows, introducing local residents to its rich natural history, from ancient fossils once buried beneath its soil to rare wasp species that now call it home. These events spark curiosity, deepen ecological understanding, and foster a sense of pride and stewardship in the local landscape. As we move forward, we will continue to deliver hands-on environmental training, inclusive nature experiences, and collaborative research. With future funding, we aim to expand our team and scale our impact, ensuring that our work continues to benefit both community and nature.
