Company activities and impact

Ethical Reading is a not-for-profit social enterprise dedicated to making Reading a better place to live, work and do business. Ethical Reading is run on a voluntary basis with the support of an Advisory Council and a dedicated team of volunteers. Ethical Reading encourages organisations and their teams to do the right thing by each other and the environment. We also work to raise awareness of ethical issues among the wider local community. Most of our activities are focused on our programmes: Business Ethics and Culture, Workplace Wellbeing, Sustainability and Ethics in Education. Our key belief is that putting more emphasis on core values like respect, responsibility and compassion could help organisations and individuals make better decisions, from the boardroom to everyday interactions. There is compelling evidence that more ethical, caring businesses attract and retain talented staff and enthusiastic customers, making them more successful. During 2024 Ethical Reading continued to make a positive impact in Reading, through: The Trees For Reading programme which focuses on planting substantial young trees in areas that need them most, such as deprived areas around Reading, to maximise the benefits of improved air quality, CO2 reduction, flood mitigation, enhanced biodiversity, and improved mental and physical wellbeing of local residents. Workshops and Webinars: Regular events are held to discuss various ethical topics, providing valuable learning opportunities for both individuals and organisations. Collaborative Learning. Our Educational initiatives aim to promote ethical practices within the community. The annual Ethics in Education programme enabled students to learn about ethical business practices, preparing them for responsible roles in the future and fostering a culture of ethics and responsibility from an early age. A social audit report can be found at https://www.ethicalreading.org.uk/

Consultation with stakeholders

Ethical Reading’s stakeholders are our Partners & Supporters (organisations) and followers (individual members of the public). They are represented on our Advisory Council, which meets two to three times per year to provide guidance on Ethical Reading development strategy. The Advisory Council recommended regular publishing of an Impact Report, emphasised focus on our Partners’ needs and seeking grants to fund programmes. Ethical Reading firmly believe that ethical business practices are essential for the success and sustainability of any organisation. Our partner support has helped us raise awareness about the importance of ethical practices and provided valuable resources and guidance to businesses of all sizes.
