COMMUNITY INTEREST ANNUAL REPORT

Company activities and impact

PART 1 - GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF THE COMPANY’S ACTIVITIES AND IMPACT In the space provided below, please insert a general account of the company’s activities in the financial year to which the report relates, including a fair and accurate description of how they have benefited the community, or section of the community, which the company is intended to serve. Delivered Middlesbrough Art Week festival over 10 days from the 26th September to the 5th October 2024. Approximately 12,000 people came out to see over 70 artists present works across painting, photography, sound, sculpture, installations, digital media, live performances, and educational workshops. The festival’s exhibition programme opened 8 curated exhibitions with a dynamic mix of regional, national and international artists. The programme also included a further 4 exhibitions organised and delivered by peers organisations in Middlesbrough. Public spaces in shopping centres, train stations, squares and high streets were activated with 4 public works as well as 11 events including talks, walks, events, gigs and performances. This year’s festival hub, in Pineapple Black featured a meadow grown by children from 10 primary schools across Middlesbrough and Tees Valley as part of UPROOT. The meadow acted as a site for the festival’s free workshop programme ‘Summat for the Bairns’ which welcomed children and families into the heart of the festival to grow, learn, make and explore. Maw enjoyed a successful launch of the festival on the 26th September, with opening night audiences of between 300-400 visitors. Prior to the public opening at NEOC exhibition ( B&M Dundas) with a secondary event at Pineapple Black for UPROOT, MAW organised an invited industry art trail tour of the exhibitions, beginning at Most Creative Station, in collaboration with Navigator North. This helped the festival directors and curators meet with different stakeholders and support relationship building across the sector, as well as introducing artists works more directly to professionals who can offer further opportunities and support. An audience capture of 11,646 is for exhibitions and direct events; 3 of the 4 public art works (Words per Minute, Matthew Young and Most Creative Station) were not regularly monitored due to shortfall in volunteers but over the the 10 day period would have added at least 1200-1500 more audience engagement conservatively. Continued funding from Middlesbrough Cultural Ambassador Fund, TVCA festival Scale-up, Arts Council NPO and investment contributions from 5 partner Universities in the North East: Norther School of Art, Newcastle, Northumbria, Sunderland & Teesside Universities for the New Graduate award which supported 10 emerging artists for a 6 month programme of studio and professional development.

Consultation with stakeholders

We work with: Arts Council England, Tees Valley Combined Authority, Middlesbrough Council, BALTIC (Gateshead) and 5 Universities across the NorthEast as arts organisations within the Tees valley. We do an evaluation of our festival each winter, and we share this information with our stakeholders. We also have one to one meetings with our stakeholders, which is an opportunity to share views and offer feedback. Quarterly reports are shared with our board of directors and the minutes of these are also shared with our oversight group.
