Basis of preparation of financial statements
The financial statements have been prepared under the historical cost convention and in accordance with Section 1A of Financial Reporting Standard 102, the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland and the Companies Act 2006.
The preparation of financial statements in compliance with FRS 102 requires the use of certain critical accounting estimates.
Monetary amounts in these financial statements are stated in pounds sterling and are rounded to the nearest whole £1, except where otherwise indicated.
The following principal accounting policies have been applied:
Having taken into account all available information about the Company’s trading prospects and cash flow requirements for 12 months from the date of approval of the financial statements, the directors consider that the Company is a going concern given the financial support of the ultimate parent company and ultimate shareholder.
Revenue is recognised to the extent that it is probable that the economic benefits will flow to the company and the revenue can be reliably measured. The service charge income is recognised in the period in which it relates.
Investments in subsidiaries are measured at cost less accumulated impairment.
Impairment of investments
Investments are assessed at each balance sheet date to determine whether there is any indication that the value is impaired. Where there is any indication that an investment may be impaired, the carrying value is tested for impairment. An impairment loss is recognised for the amount by which the investment's carrying amount exceeds its estimated value. Investments that have been previously impaired are reviewed at each balance sheet date to assess whether there is any indication that the impairment losses recognised in prior periods may no longer exist or may have decreased.
Short-term debtors are measured at transaction price, less any impairment.

2.Accounting policies (continued)

Cash and cash equivalents
Cash is represented by cash in hand and deposits with financial institutions repayable without penalty on notice of not more than 24 hours.
The company only enters into basic financial instrument transactions that result in the recognition of financial assets and liabnilities like trade and other debtors and creditors and loans to and from related parties.
Short-term creditors are measured at the transaction price.
Tangible fixed assets under the cost model are stated at historical cost less accumulated depreciation and any accumulated impairment losses. Historical cost includes expenditure that is directly attributable to bringing the asset to the location and condition necessary for it to be capable of operating in the manner intended by management.
Depreciation is provided on the following basis:
Freehold land and buildings
Over 50 years (see below)
Straight line over 20 years
Fixtures, fittings and equipment
Straight line over 5, 10 or 15 years as appropriate
The cost of freehold buildings and course development is depreciated to a residual value of 50% at variable annual rates over 50 years; 1% for the first 15 years, 2% for the next 15 years and 2.75% for the final 20 years.
No depreciation is charged in respect of land.
The assets' residual values, useful lives and depreciation methods are reviewed, and adjusted prospectively if appropriate, or if there is an indication of a significant change since the last reporting date.
Gains and losses on disposals are determined by comparing the proceeds with the carrying amount and are recognised within 'other operating income' in the Statement of Income and Retained Earnings.
Interest income is recognised in profit or loss using the effective interest method.

Judgements in applying accounting policies and key sources of estimation uncertainty
Estimates and judgements are continually evaluated and are based on historical experience and other factors, including expectations of future events that are believed to be reasonable under the circumstances.
Specifically, the value of the investment in subsidiary company, being £771,716 (2023: £771,716), has been reviewed by the directors who consider that the cost on valuation included within the accounts is reasonable.
In addition to this, the cost of freehold buildings and course development is depreciated to a residual value of 50% at variable annual rates over 50 years; 1% for the first 15 years, 2% for the next 15 years and 2.75% for the final 20 years. The net book value at the year end was £12,430,654 (2023: £12,325,741) with a depreciation charge in the year of £84,286 (2023: £83,319). The policy has been reviewed by the directors who consider this to still be appropriate as the building carries a significant residual value. The depreciation policy increases over the 50 years as the longer the property is held, the greater the upkeep cost and therefore, the greater the charge.
The company has estimated losses of £398,245 (2023: £412,957) available for carry forward against future trading profits.
The average monthly number of employees, including directors, during the year was 4 (2023 - 4).
