Taxation Taxation for the year comprises current and deferred tax. Tax is recognised in the Income Statement, except to the extent that it relates to items recognised in other comprehensive income or directly in equity. Current or deferred taxation assets and liabilities are not discounted. Current tax is recognised at the amount of tax payable using the tax rates and laws that have been enacted or substantively enacted by the balance sheet date. Deferred tax Deferred tax is recognised in respect of all timing differences that have originated but not reversed at the balance sheet date. Timing differences arise from the inclusion of income and expenses in tax assessments in periods different from those in which they are recognised in financial statements. Deferred tax is measured using tax rates and laws that have been enacted or substantively enacted by the year end and that are expected to apply to the reversal of the timing difference. Unrelieved tax losses and other deferred tax assets are recognised only to the extent that it is probable that they will be recovered against the reversal of deferred tax liabilities or other future taxable profits.

COMMUNITY INTEREST ANNUAL REPORT

Year Ending: 30 September 2024

Company activities and impact

In this period of operation (1st October 2023 - 30th September 2024) , emphasis has continued to be on informing and developing policy and practice relating to those who have problems accessing and using digital technologies. However, the increasing disenfranchisement of older and less-able members of society who find themselves excluded by the features and constraints of the 'Online-Only' world and the growing erosion of human help either on the telephone or face-to-face becomes more evident every day. As digital increasingly becomes the only option, there is a significant risk that many individuals could be excluded entirely from accessing crucial information and services, effectively stripping them of their rights to engage with and participate in society. We are at an important tipping point for society regarding the impact we are willing to accept digitalisation to have in all of our lives. The more that digital-first and digital-only become accepted norms. the harder it will be to tum back the clock. Much of 2023-2024 was devoted to raising awareness of these issues and exploring avenues for developing an effective 'call to action' - to create a more digitally-inclusive future. At a fundamental level what is dear is the need to entrench an understanding of digital inclusivity into the collective consciousness. Just as universal human rights are enshrined in international law, so too does digital inclusion need to become a widely shared value which is clearly embodied by institutional practices. Achieving this will require collaborative action across a range of key stakeholders - this is the forward agenda for the work of the DTSI. BENEFIT FOR THE COMMUNITY The benefit of these dissemination and publication activities is to make the vast knowledge base more readily available in order to inform the many interventions taking place both nationally and in the community to bridge the digital divide. Too often, although these interventions/initiatives and projects are well-intentioned, it is frequently the case that they are not sufficiently well-informed to avoid replication of known pitfalls (e.g. often failing to understand the real needs of the intended users - and therefore failing to meet real users needs). The objective of the ongoing Documentation and Dissemination programme is to encourage work in this sphere to become increasingly 'mainstream' and pervasive throughout our economy and society.
