Viv Gordon Company CIC continues to work as a CSA survivor-led arts and social justice organisation, building voice, visibility, community and cultural leadership with and by survivors of child sexual abuse, aged 14+. 2024 marked a year of consolidation and growth for the organisation, as we continued delivery of the Home Office–funded national partnership project UpFront Survivors (with SARSAS, The Greenhouse and Coventry University). This programme, which runs until March 2025, enabled a wide range of creative and community-building activities. In the Finding the Words strand, we hosted writing and multi-arts workshops with groups including Imara, Gloucester Rape Crisis, Women’s Centre Cornwall’s Young Empowered Women’s group, and She Spoke in Gloucester. In Bristol, trainees from our Creative Leaders Training programme also began leading their own workshops, supported by VGC. The project extended to Leeds through our partnership with Visible Leeds, culminating in creative work for film, and to Cornwall, where survivors’ creative writing was showcased at Reclaim the Night, attended by over 200 survivors and allies. In the Creative Leaders Training strand of UpFront Survivors, we expanded our reach by forming new partnerships in Gloucester (with JOLT Studios) and recruiting nine CSA survivor artists into training – exceeding our target. Participants brought diverse practices including photography, poetry, spoken word, circus and visual arts. The National Creative Social Change Network also grew, with guest speakers from across the arts, activism and academia. Responding to member feedback, sessions in 2024 focused on practical skills for campaign building, with the group agreeing to collaborate on a collective version of VGC’s ZebraDayCSA (Survivors’ Pride) campaign, planned for January 2025. Our pop-up cultural space also continued to thrive. Following previous events in Exeter and Bristol, in 2024 we hosted a week-long programme in Leeds in partnership with East Street Arts and Visible Leeds. Across six days, we delivered trainee-led workshops, Finding the Words sessions, an exhibition of our ABC of CSA artwork, performances by survivor artists, and community events. The programme attracted nearly 200 attendances and was widely praised for creating safe, supportive, survivor-led cultural space. We also secured new investment through an Innovate UK grant, which supported the development of our ABC of CSA training offer. This included training six trainers to deliver the programme, piloting training with five host organisations (all of whom gave positive feedback), and strengthening organisational capacity through new staffing, HR policies, and business and marketing mentoring. Another milestone in 2024 was taking on a "meanwhile space" empty shop in Bristol, supported by East Street Arts. Intended as a short-term trial, the space became an invaluable base for VGC – hosting meetings, training, rehearsals, and creative development. It provided a vital platform for the run of Viv Gordon’s autobiographical theatre show Cutting Out, which sold out across six performances and will now be redeveloped for future touring in theatres and found spaces. Development also continued on our gig-theatre show Restless, with Arts Council England investment supporting new music, script work, and a work-in-progress sharing in London. We also began a new creative relationship with Jim Barr at J&J Studios to record tracks, laying the foundation for a future EP/album release. In autumn–winter 2024, Viv worked with Visible Leeds on a co-created film with their Reference Group, through a series of creative writing workshops leading to script development and filming. The completed film will be launched in 2025. Alongside these projects, Viv Gordon was invited as a keynote speaker at several major cross-sector conferences, including Barnardo’s, Drop the Disorder, Well City, and multiple dentistry sector events, sharing insights on access, inclusion, and the inherent creativity of CSA survivors. Across 2024, VGC reached over 1,400 people through in-person activity, and worked directly with more than 200 CSA survivors. These achievements mark a year of artistic ambition, organisational growth, and deepened survivor-led impact, as we continue to create cultural spaces of visibility, voice, and community for CSA survivors.
