'ON THE EDGE' FUSION YOUTH ORCHESTRA

Directors' report period ended 31 December 2024

The directors present their report with the financial statements of the company for the period ended 31 December 2024

Principal activities of the company

As stated in its Memorandum and Articles of Association (constitution), 'On The Edge' (OTE) objects are to advance, improve, develop and maintain public education in, and appreciation of, the art and science of music in all aspects by any means the trustees see fit including through the presentation of public concerts and recitals. The organisation is committed to making music accessible to young people from all backgrounds in Birmingham, with a particular focus on inclusion, creative development, and exposure to diverse musical traditions. Its activities are underpinned by a belief in the transformative power of music to empower individuals and strengthen communities.

Political and charitable donations

Core income for the year came from a mix of individual donations and foundation grants. These were essential in sustaining operational capability during a research-focused year. The charity remains grateful to its regular donors and is actively seeking new funders aligned with its mission to support community-based music education.

Additional information

Charitable activities Where growth in new areas was perceived, ‘On The Edge’ has investigated the potential for new events and workshops. In 2024, although opportunities were in abundance, the expectation of ‘On The Edge’ to bring a fully funded opportunity restricted our ability to offer an immediate viable activity. All data concerning these potential new projects will inform future strategies and the focus in 2025 will be on how to deliver an incremental growth to assimilate new areas. Fundraising activities With limited volunteer capacity, redevelopment efforts are deliberately extended over a 24-month timeline. Baseline operational funding was secured to sustain core functions, including equipment maintenance and strategic communications. OTE is actively developing proposals for future funding rounds to support regional expansion and multi-year delivery models. The charity continues to benefit from a loyal base of individual donors and institutional funders. ACHIEVEMENT AND PERFORMANCE Internal and external factors Though the long-term effects of COVID-19 have retained a residual impact in the operating environment in 2024, the organisation is making strides in restructuring and planning capacity. Key enablers of future success include board development, succession planning, increased fundraising capabilities, and a consistent pool of engaged young musicians ready to participate. OTE ended 2024 with a clear plan to adjust growth, branding and development following an extended period of essential-only activity.
