Our mission at Tan Cerdd is to authentically celebrate, promote and amplify Black Welsh Music artists, Black music genres, the Black diaspora in Wales, Black culture and traditions. With a strong focus on empowering and uplifting young Black Welsh artists and media professionals, we stand committed to addressing the existing inequality in access to opportunities, resources, and career advancement by providing dedicated support and a network of industry professionals. Tan Cerdd CIC has made significant progress over the past year, continuing its mission to uplift and support Black and diverse communities, promote cultural exchange, and provide opportunities for emerging artists. Through innovative programming, community-driven events, and international collaborations, Tan Cerdd has positioned itself as a vital force in the Welsh music scene, ensuring that diverse voices are heard and celebrated. In 2024, Tan Cerdd CIC strengthened its role as a leading Black-led music and culture organisation in Wales, delivering landmark events, sector partnerships, and international representation. - Journey to Brecon Stage – Brecon Jazz Festival 2024 Tan curated and delivered a five-hour stage at Bethel Square, showcasing Black and diverse artists with live bands and musicians. This stage created intentional visibility for underrepresented artists at one of Wales’ flagship festivals. - Brecon Jazz Club CIO Collaboration Tan partnered with Brecon Jazz Club CIO to deliver a dedicated jazz night, featuring Tan network artists from Cardiff and surrounding areas. This collaboration provided professional platforms for emerging Black Welsh jazz artists. - Music & Race Symposium – Chapter Arts, Cardiff (October 2024) In partnership with Ty Cerdd and Black Lives in Music, Tan co-delivered the second Music & Race Symposium. The day combined performances with sector discussions, challenging the Welsh music industry to invest in and address structural inequities affecting Black musicians. - Trac Cymru Collaboration – New Traditions Project Tan worked with Trac Cymru to explore Welsh identity through Black and Brown perspectives, using traditional Welsh instruments such as the harp alongside bilingual songwriting. The project created new work that redefined “traditional” Welsh music and supported diverse artists in exploring cultural heritage. - Cardiff Music City Festival – The Globe Events (October & December 2024) With sponsorship from Cardiff Council, Tan programmed major events as part of the Cardiff Music City Festival: (i) Terri Walker + Guests: A free, community-access concert celebrating Black artists and soul/R&B performances with supporting acts including Aisha Kigs. (ii) Children of Zeus + Guests: A ticketed event in December (post year end) featuring the acclaimed Manchester duo, supported by Welsh artists such as Lemfreck, Mercy Rose, and DJ Jaffa. - Jazz Promotion Network (JPN) Conference – Bristol 2024 Tan participated in the annual Jazz Promotion Network conference, advocating for Welsh Black artists, building connections across the UK jazz sector, and reinforcing the importance of equity in programming and investment. - WOMEX 2024 - Manchester Tan had a presence at WOMEX 2024 in Manchester, supporting young Black creatives from Wales to attend as cultural ambassadors. This expanded international networks and positioned Welsh Black music within the global industry conversation. - HMP Cardiff – Black History Music & Wellbeing Workshops (October 2024) Tan delivered music and wellbeing sessions at HMP Cardiff, using Black traditional and popular music as a foundation for participation, reflection, and positive expression during Black History Month. In summary, across 2024, Tan Cerdd CIC delivered major festivals, symposiums, international representation, and innovative cultural projects. These activities advanced Tan's mission to platform Black music, support emerging talent, and create infrastructure for equity and representation in the Welsh and global music industries. We continue to collaborate closely with our partners to curate engaging and diverse performances, exhibitions, and workshops that celebrate the richness of black artistry and cultural heritage. Through these collaborations, Tan Cerdd aims to foster a vibrant and inclusive arts landscape that reflects the diverse cultural fabric of Wales. We are dedicated to amplifying black voices, promoting representation, and creating spaces where black music and culture can thrive.
The company’s stakeholders are black musicians in Wales. We will continue to grow the database of artists based in Wales and keep our research updated. We are constantly consulting with them and what barriers they face within the arts sector. We have heard a broad range of ideas and opinions and through active engagement, we amplify the voices of young Black Welsh artists, promote their work, and provide networking opportunities to help them excel in their careers. We believe in creating a platform where they can showcase their talents, gain exposure, and access the resources needed for career advancement. Our other stakeholders are the community in which we work and the surrounding areas of Cardiff where we want to spread our message and promote Black History and our overall mission. We have been consulting with local government, local arts organisations and the general public to identify gaps in the market and what demand there is for specific music genres and events that we plan to showcase in the future.
