Company activities and impact

Yate Community Bike Hub is a volunteer run initiative whose activities support the community of Yate and its surrounding areas in a mission to make movement on two wheels a fun and accessible option for everyone. In 2024 through our volunteer workshops we have recycled over 900 donated bikes back into the community at low or no cost to provide affordable cycles for anyone that needs a bike including 79 bikes gifted free of charge to those most in need. We have run 23 free maintenance courses and practice sessions empowering more than 120 people to fix their own bikes. We have also run more than 12 Dr Bike sessions to get simple fixes done free of charge. We have worked with local education providers to support 5 work experience placements for young adults with additional needs to give them the experience of maintaining bikes in a work environment. In 2024 we began running cycle skills courses 4 of which supported adults with additional needs and 21 “Rusty Rider” sessions were run which supported members of the community to gain confidence cycling again.

Consultation with stakeholders

Yate Community Bike Hubs stakeholders are the residents of Yate and the surrounding area. The directors of the company have lived in Yate for a number of years and the Hub evolved from a need identified by the local community action group and the local cycling organization. We have located the Hub in the centre of Yate Shopping Centre in a location with high footfall and have sought to develop a reputation locally as a knowledge base for information on cycling routes, equipment and active travel. Our volunteers are not only focused on recycling bikes, but also engaging with customers to better understand how the Hub can help with supporting customers to use cycling as a form of transport. The Hub also engages the wider community through its outreach work at local events, such as the Yate Rocks Festival, Ladden Garden Festival, Old Sodbury Festival, Chipping Sodbury Eat Festival and the Yate Aging Better Festival. We have also developed a strong local online presence as an additional route to engage with local residents. Alongside our popular free maintenance and practice courses, we have broadened our offer to include Rusty Rider sessions open to all members of the public which provide additional opportunities to engage with the local community to understand how we can better meet their needs.
