Company activities and impact

In 2024 FLAARE looked to support more young people through supporting youth workers (many of whom see over 100 young people a week). This led to a pivot in outputs, including the piloting and testing of concepts that FLAARE thought would benefit this group. We were testing assumption we had made as well as being informed by youth workers themselves about what skills they would like to gain. In the FY ending 31st December 2024 FLAARE ran a singular one-off speed-mentoring and office visit in Novemeber 2024 for a group of young people aged 16-18. This workshop focused on supporting young people from Oasis South Bank school in sixth form, gain access to a STEM employer and mentors. The feedback from this session indicated that: * 66.7% of the young people experienced an office setting for the first time in this session (a Gatsby benchmark). * 66.7% of participants had never had mentoring before the session and 77.8% of the participants find the mentorship useful/helpful. * “The mentoring was brilliant and I learned how to communicate my ideas to a team and pay more attention to detail.” * The fact that there was so many mentors meant that each person had a valuable 1-1 session and could ask multiple questions to one mentor in the given time was very efficient and useful. * “it was perfect!” The main activity undertaken in the financial year, was the development and testing of a series of workshops for youth workers. This began with a focus group listening session in March, with a group of youth workers from Haringey Council. From this session we learnt that youth workers felt they were underappreciated, there is a lack of awareness to what their role entails, and that they have little to no opportunity for personal or professional development. This combined led to the development of the pilot sessions we rolled out in May and June. In May 2024, FLAARE worked with two (2) external experts, to create a youth worker specific Leadership and Purpose session. This session focused on Growth Mindset, delivering and receiving Feedback. This session was delivered to 11 youth workers/practitioners and members of the youth team from Haringey Council. The session was well received, particularly the facilitation by our external experts. In June 2024, FLAARE ran a session at Avande’s London Offices, supporting youth workers from across Haringey and Tower Hamlets in their personal and professional development. The session focused on project management, networking, and end-to-end planning. We delivered this through dynamic, creative teaching practices and partnerships with support from talented Avanade employees volunteering to offer their expertise and different perspectives.

Consultation with stakeholders

FLAARE CIC’s stakeholders are: > Young people across London > Our sponsor Avanade > Youth workers across London, primarily from Haringey council. Young people who participated in our speed mentoring workshop gave feedback after the event. Some testimonial that we recorded included: > “I have learnt and gained valuable insights about the firm Avanade and different jobs that are available in the sector of tech, finance and counselling. I have gained beneficial information about the jobs of the mentors and what they do.” > When asked to describe the session in 1 word, three (3) young people independently said “Insightful”. Other words included “Enjoyable”, “Eye-opening” and “Informative”. > Every participant said that they they enjoyed the session would like to take part in another FLAARE session. Some areas that the young people said we could improve on included: Two (2) comments on ensuring the food we served was hot One (1) comment received was: “Mentoring was good. However, I believe at some point the answers did feel repetitive as if it could be summarised. Therefore, hands on experience later would be perfect to put those words into actions that essentially feels as though we’re in that environment rather than ‘visitors’. This is just to make the most of the experience. But overall loved it” This gives us a good view on how speed mentoring works for some young people’s learning styles but also, in a short amount of time a summary can be helpful to avoid having the same conversation over and over. We will look to incorporate a FAQ’s section to any future speed mentoring sessions. This will be built with young people, to understand what general questions they want answered. Avanade is a technology consultant and was the primary sponsor of FLAARE CIC in the year ending December 2024. Avanade sponsored the rollout of the Toolkit, the speed mentoring session held at their offices, as well as one (1) of the two (2) pilot youth worker workshops again held in their central London offices. Feedback received on the youth worker session from Avanade colleagues included: “It was great and insightful” Software Engineer, Avanade “This session did something quite powerful on a personal level, showing where I could value as a volunteer. I was worried I wouldn't be young and relevant enough but instead I felt very relevant'.” Senior Director, Avanade We continue to work with the Avanade Citizenship team to develop how this pilot can be turned into a full Youth Worker Leadership Accelerator, to rollout in 2025. Youth workers are a key stakeholder for FLAARE, as we continue to build new ways to support them and the essential work they complete for young people. What actions are you going to take forward from this session? “Start building a project that supports the needs of my participants. One where I can expose them to corporate events.” Youth Practitioner, Haringey Council “This was more than training, this was networking and opening our eyes to new perspectives, and inspiring us to get the best for our young people.” Senior Youth Manager, Haringey Council “Session was really informative and fun. It was great meeting everyone and a fun practical engaging day. I really enjoyed it was a lovely opportunity to network with likeminded people from all sectors.” Youth Worker, HARCA Spotlight Poplar
