Over several board meetings, the company completed a careful review of its Human Resources and Health, Safety and Safeguarding policies, with input from its survivor directors to ensure that the needs of the survivor directors were sensitively met, whilst maintaining a thorough, compliant approach to meeting the needs of staff and directors. The policies covered safeguarding in respect of those with whom the company engaged, as well as those who worked within it, including making sure that any survivors who contacted the company for support were signposted to sources of such support (which is not within the remit of Survivor Training - Beyond Just Words). This meant that such survivors would not simply be turned away without support. - With continued generous support from our funders, we were able to establish a solid financial footing, whilst at the same time starting to explore alternative sources of funding to make such funding sustainable. - The company changed its name to Survivor Training - Beyond Just Words and received an uplift in enquiries, suggesting that this name was more meaningful to potential trainee organisations. - In recognition of the de facto role of the Chair, which was more allied to that of a Chief Executive, the former Chair undertook that new role and a new Chair was appointed. A new director was appointed, who had acted as an associate for some months, bringing the board up to full strength and enabling us to draw on a further field of expertise. - Directors successfully applied for DBS clearance to enable them to deliver training to target groups where this was required. As part of capacity building, the CEO and Chair began to receive mentoring - The training session offered by two board members was demonstrated to the whole board and stakeholders, and useful feedback taken on board. This helped to consolidate the quality assurance of our training and expand the capacity of all directors to be able to offer training. Training delivered included: - Two training and support sessions with primary school children were held and evaluations were very positive. The participating children benefitted from the opportunity to share their feelings and it was encouraging to see them supporting each other. - Three training sessions with teachers on Adverse Childhood Experiences, which were very positively evaluated, expanding those trainees understanding and confidence - A training session with Douai Benedictine Abbey. This was so positively received that the company has been invited back to deliver a further session
Our stakeholders are those who receive our services, those who operate in the same field and those who operate in a similar way but in relation to different aspects of safeguarding, training or advocacy. As our training offering is bespoke, it is particularly important for us to engage with our prospective trainee stakeholders, to understand their learning needs. The company held meetings with three other organisations or individuals undertaking similar or analogous projects, or different projects facing similar challenges to Beyond Just Words. Other engagement with stakeholders included the following: - Meeting with Durham University, some directors having been involved in the preparation of its Cross of the Moment Report, launched after 5 years work. They subsequently met others involved in the project to discuss its future. - Meeting with a primary school in Cardiff to explore the possibility of running a pilot project of the company’s training and support group for children. - Meeting with two Parish Safeguarding Representatives in Sheffield to discuss how the Parish Safeguarding role could benefit the wider community - Conference in Newcastle, attended by an international body of people working in Safeguarding. The Boundary Breaking Project which had led to the Cross of the Moment report, was presented, as well as presentations from international speakers - Meeting with the Bishop of Lancaster to explore the company’s training offering. - A meeting with the training lead from the Catholic Safeguarding Standards Agency who subsequently attended a board meeting to introduce himself and gain an understanding of the company’s activities - Meeting with another survivor-led organisation to explore joint working The company also approached 6 potential trainee organisations offering our training. It was in response to feedback from these organisations that the company name was changed. The CEO also talked about the company’s work to the congregations of several Catholic parishes, broadening awareness of what can be done and needs to be done to improve the survivor experience of the safeguarding system. In November 2024, two directors were invited to Rome to present at the conference of the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors. Their presentations were very positively received such that they have since been invited to review draft international policy documents. The slow extension of the reach of the company’s training into different sections of the Catholic church, as well as collaborative conversations with others involved in safeguarding, will continue, fuelled by the unique power of the survivor experience, applied constructively to improve the future experience of survivors and give confidence to those who are trained to contribute to that endeavour.
The total amount paid or receivable by directors in respect of qualifiying services as £34003. There were no other transactions or arrangements in connection with the remuneration of directors, or compensation for director’s loss of office, which require to be disclose
No transfer of assets other than for full consideration
