Company activities and impact The core aim of justlife.art CIC is to provide art education of the highest quality primarily to the local community in West Cornwall, the rest of the County of Cornwall, and to occasional visitors who happen upon us. Inclusion and diversity being at the heart of everything we do, especially for those with lived experience of mental health disability, which often brings with it experiences of discrimination that have yet to be addressed in the main in today’s society. Creation of a warm, friendly down to earth grass roots environment in which to create. Venue In the long term it will become essential to secure a permanent venue/studio of our own so that we can store all of our equipment and materials, which are many, so that we dont have to transport it to the community halls hired at a daily rate that works out quite expensive and laboursome. Plus we need the stability as after only 20 months operating out of St Just Parish Church Rooms they then needed to do essential works to the building and we had to relocate to Sancreed Village Hall that wasn’t an insulated building and was extremely expensive and hard to heat in the winter. We have some long term plans to acquire and insulate a corrugated iron agricultural barn to turn into a communal art studio for teaching, but will need to seek funding for this. Courses/Workshops/Tutors We delivered a yearlong Portrait Course taught by Jason Walker RP, giving many the confidence to continue regular portrait practice. Then towards the end of 2023 Duncan Cameron began teaching Anatomy for Life Drawing workshops every couple of months, and with Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the Year 2023 winner Wendy Barratt CBPP teaching a three day portrait intensive and a one day life drawing workshop in May 2024 things began to take a leap forward. It was the start of commissioning high profile portrait painters from aroud the UK to come and teach with us, many of whom are members of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters(RP) or Contemporary British Portrait Painters (CBPP). Untutored Sessions – Portraits of Sancreed/life drawing We experimented with our weekly life drawing sessions with some aerial acrobatics and pole dancing as well as masked and costume and all day poses. We also commenced a weekly untutored portrait group where we sat for each other. This then developed into painting the portraits of the local community in Sancreed Parish aiding in keeping course costs as low as possible as not needing to pay for life models to come and sit for us. Also, integrating more with and involving the local community, many of whom then signed up for some tutored or untutored drawing and/or painting sessions Volunteering To date some attendees have volunteered to help set up and everyone attending helps clear up. The running of justlife.art CIC has mainly been run voluntarily by Director Helen (Rose) Phillips. and to a degree Christopher Rowland during his term of directorship, however it is hoped that regular attendees will come forward and volunteer to take on more specific roles as we grow. The hope is that those with lived experience of mental health disability and/or other protected characteristics might benefit from being involved, gaining confidence in their abilities and value and acquiring new skills along the way and enjoy and shape the justlife.art community. Stakeholders/attendees One of the key intentions of justlife.art CIC is to privde the highest quality art courses, and possibly in time low rent art studios, whilst being inclusive around protected characteristics and the marginalised. Especially wanting to eradicate stigma, pathologisation, stereotyping and assumption around mental health disability that is still so prevalent in today’s society. Often provisions for those with mental health disability can be somewhat patronising and lack recognition of the skills and potential of those attending. There has been no formal surveying of percentages of attendees with disclosed mental health disability, physical disability, LGBTQIA+ and Black ,Asian and Ethnic Minority. In terms of informal disclosure there have been around 40% of those attending that have disclosed having lived experience of mental health disability. Attendees often comment on how comfortable and down to earth the environment is, aimed at demystifying the art world and all its conceptualisation. Consultations with regular attendees helps shape the weekly sessions and courses, and tend to take place informally during weekly portrait and life drawing sessions and via email as well as some meetings over lunch. Engagement and attendance at Village Hall committee meetings and council open meetings has been another important way of canvasing local residents and finding out more about what is wanted/needed and where the company can meet this.. Also, we recognise that inclusion must include financial inclusion and as such we have been running the courses at cost price. We have an email list of over 300 whom we email a newsletter each month to advise of news and up coming courses and sessions and invite feedback, and are on Instagram where we post mainly photos of peoples work created during sessions and of fliers for courses. Impact for the community Providing a small community art school of sorts within a rural setting with focus on what those living locally need in terms of art practice development rather than visitors to Cornwall, although we do welcome a few visitors here and there onto courses. Providing highest quality art courses at cost price making as affordable as we can currently, however would like to be able to offer some subsidised places at some point. Providing a safe space for those feeling marginalsed, isolated, living with mental health disability where they are valued, seen, heard and celebrated, and where people gain skills and confidence in their art practice. Involving the entire community (Portaits of Sancreed) to attend and sit for their portrait, encouraging community involvement and creativity. Many who sat for their portrait have then gone on to engage in some tutored and untutored sessions themselves and others pop in for a cuppa some weeks. Others who attend regularly have begun being commissioned to paint portraits and have exhibitions selling their own work. Directors’ Remuneration There has been no remuneration for work undertaken by the directors, as such all works undertaken by directors for the CIC have been voluntary. This report was created by and signed by Director Helen (Rose) Phillips on 29th September 2025
The company's stakeholders are residents of Cornwall who are artists or who have an interest in engaging in art, especially those who feel marginalised and/or who have lived experience of mental health disability. The company is actively inclusive seeking to diversify wherever possible. Regulars at the weekly life drawing and portrait untutored sessions are consulted on everything the company does as the are its lifeblood. Artist educators have been commissioned to come and teach courses following consultation with and recommendations from regular attendees. Doors have been canvassed to engage the local community to come and sit for their portrait and to inform about sessions and courses. Over 300 people on the mailing list which delivers a monthly newsletter informing about what's on and any changes but also encourages suggestions and feedback. Other stakeholders include: Disability Cornwall who have assisted with information and suggestions regarding inclusion and accessibility and on how to actively engage members of the community that identify as disabled to attend, model, facilitate etc, The Parish Council, who have advised on the rural parish and what it feels is needed, and the Hall Committee whom the company hires the venue from. The Company is a member of Creative Kernow Associates where networking with other venues and artists who run courses is encouraged where it is a great resource in finding out what else is out there and what its needed.
Directors’ Remuneration There has been no remuneration for work undertaken by the directors, as such all works undertaken by directors for the CIC have been voluntary. Director’s Donations Director, Helen (Rose) Phillips, donated £12,290 as well as approximately 15 easels, 20 drawing boards, 20 fold up side tables, oil painting, acrylic, and watercolour painting brushes and an array of numerous quality art materials. These donations, both finantial and material, were made irrevocably and irreversibly. Director’s Loan Director, Helen (Rose) Phillips, purchased lighting and materials to the amount of £1,075.09, on loan to justlife.art CIC, until it was then repaid in full.
