The company conducts funeral services and offers short term pastoral support,. The company opened in December 2018 with the intent of offering support primarily to families and friends of the deceased who have no connection with any church but wish to have a funeral service with some Christian elements. This might typically be because the deceased was Christian but the family and friends are not, or because the family and friends themselves retain a cul- tural attachment to Christianity but do not attend church. Pastoral support is offered up to the funeral and a few days beyond, but the company offers help and guidance in finding longer term support. While most of the funerals taken are paid, some are not. The company maintains a bank bal- ance sufficient to pay officiants to take some funerals pro bono, e.g. in the case of the death of a young child. While the original intention was to offer "religion light" services, the pastoral care is also of- fered to families and friends wanting entirely secular funerals. It has also been found that some deceased persons have no known friends or relatives, with the funerals being organised by the council or the deceased's solicitors. In this case the com- pany endeavours to find any previously unidentified friends or relatives in the area.
While friends and families of the deceased are important stakeholders, their engagement is short term unless they return to the Company for other funerals. Nevertheless, their comments are collected and noted. The idea for the company came from a conversation between a local Funeral Director and a Rector when the Funeral Director noted that few funeral officiants serve the ground between fully religious services (whether Christian or of another religion) and fully secular services. This tends to push families with no church connections towards secular services, which is often not what they want. The Funeral Director's company is one stakeholder with whom the Company frequently engages in discussion and the Rector is a Director of the Company. Our other main stakeholders are the funeral officiants, some of whom are Members or Directors of the Company. Training and peer review sessions are held on a bi-monthly basis.
As the Company has no permanent employees, some of the Directors do administration such as booking funerals at the rate of £15.25 per hour.
No transfer of assets other than for full consideration
