We hold a dance on almost every Monday evening of the year. At each event there are ways that people on low income can come for free: in exchange for helping on the evening or through sponsorship provided by others on higher income. Overall this regular dance gives not only physical exercise, it also helps build community and network. We find during the summer season that attendance is boosted by people visiting the area, which can often be because of the dances we hold: their ‘fame’ having spread world wide. People who come to dance often say something along the lines that their mental health benefits enormously through having this regular dance time.
The Company's stakeholders are both the community served by these dances as well as those holding the dances. Each week there is opportunity for those at the dance to feedback their experience. For more difficult areas people are asked to send in emails writing of any concern. At each event there are two ‘space supporters’ who are regular dancers who have undergone training to respond to any concerns or questions from the dancers. Since these ‘space supporters’ have been introduced there has been an increased sense of safety, in an emotional sense. We have been told by visitors familiar with similar dances held in other parts of the country / world that this creates a different good atmosphere at our events. With those who hold the evenings ie teachers, there are regular meetings where all get together and discuss issues and plans. In addition, each week a report is written by whoever holds the evening so that the others have a sense of what’s happening week-by-week.
