Through the West Lakeland community interest company (CiC), formed in 2021, a community of 40 farmers are tackling changing agricultural policy and the relationship between farming, the environment and climate change. The West Lakes CiC vision is to ensure the long-term stability of traditional, nature-friendly farming and land management in an area covering around 25,000 acres. It runs from Ennerdale to Wasdale Head, and takes in three commons: Kinniside, Stockdale Moor and Nether Wasdale. Activities 2024/2025 1. Continued engagement with 40 farms in assisting them with farm habitat mapping 2. Assisted farmers in creation of Land App accounts for Environmental Stewardship, Countryside Stewardship and Sustainable Farming Incentive schemes. 3. Commissioned further ecological surveys on selected farms 4. Performed soil and leaf analysis on a further 3 farms including two farms which were surveyed in full to provide upland and lowland land comparisons 5. Held on farm events with a focus on soil health and grassland management and tree planting. 6. Carried out woodland surveys on 6 farms with view to creating habitat corridors through tree planting 7. Collaborated with other groups and projects on the development of new payments for public goods, BNG, carbon footprints and carbon sequestration 8. Created a tree nursery for cultivation of trees from seeds taken locally to be planted back onto local farms 9. Commenced a Natural Environment Investment Readiness project looking to develop green financing. 10. Commenced a training programme for 4 young people to become agricultural advisors
Lake District National Park Authority (LDNPA) – LDNPA hold the Farming in Protected Landscapes funding. We put forward our plans which are then approved for funding and we provide monthly feedback to the LDNPA on our activities. We hold regular meeting with members of the LDNPA team to discuss potential activities to support farmers and the environment. Cumbria Wildlife Trust (CWT) – we consult regularly with CWT to explore opportunities to deliver knowledge transfer from CWT to farmers and vice versa which has led to a number of on farm events and training for our facilitators. West Cumbria Rivers Trust (WCRT) – we consult regularly with WCRT to explore opportunities to improve water quality and water flow across our catchment area. This has led to a joint venture to plant trees along one of the rivers. WCRT are also a main collaborator with the NEIRF project Farm Carbon Toolkit (FCTK) – we have consulted FCTK to explore opportunities to understand carbon sequestration on the farms, hills and common land. National Trust (NT) – we have worked alongside the NT in tree planting along one of the rivers to lower water temperature and increase habitat for invertebrates and fish. Environment Agency (EA) - we have worked alongside the EA in tree planting along one of the rivers to lower water temperature and increase habitat for invertebrates and fish. Local farmers – we have consulted local farmers through surveys to ask their opinions on a number of issues relating to farming and the environment leading to workshops for example on grassland management and soil testing.
