In our last financial year, the Company has: -Developed the Gosport Community Food Network with the support of the Gosport Allotment Association and funding from the Royal Horticultural Society to help build stronger connections between organisations, community and voluntary groups and businesses involved in the local food system -Organised a number of activities to support more people to grow, cook and eat together and to ease access to affordable, nutritious and sustainable food – including Cook and Share and Seed Potato share. As a result, more people are growing cooking and eating more fresh food. -Ran a 4 week Nutrition Course to support people to cook from scratch, reduce food waste, cut costs and understand nutritional needs. -Set up a Full of Beans campaign to encourage people to grow, cook and eat more beans, pulses and lentils. We created recipe cards and delivered demonstrations across Gosport to raise confidence levels in cooking beans and lentils. -Created and distributed over 200 recipe bags based on the Full of Beans campaign to Community Pantry customers and other groups who would benefit most. -Attended events to promote IEG and the Full of Beans Campaign including 4 Find Your Thing events in local parks and activities in Hampshire Libraries. -Produced and circulated regular newsletters to celebrate the great work happening in the town and to raise awareness of events and opportunities that they may otherwise have missed
The company’s stakeholders are organisations, community groups and businesses who are involved in the local food system alongside local community members who access services. The directors of the company live and work in Gosport. They use relevant data including local health data available in the Joint Strategic Needs Assessment to learn more about the local community and they take every opportunity to speak to community members directly about what’s working well and what could work better in our local food system. Through speaking to local people and groups, we recognised that many people are unaware of the benefits of eating more beans, pulses and lentils ie low cost, filling, highly nutritious, planet friendly. We also heard that many people had little confidence and knowledge about how to cook and grow them. We used this information to drive our Full of Beans campaign. We speak regularly to community members, customers and staff at the local Community Pantry, the Gosport Food Partnership, staff at the Citizens Advice Bureau and other organisations to find out how we can support more people to have greater access to affordable, nutritious and sustainable food. We are aware that an established local food distributor recently closed down its operations impacting on customers. This has made our Full of Beans campaign all the more relevant. We are in contact with local and national networks and keep abreast of and link our work to local health and wellbeing and environmental strategies and priorities. We’re aware that key priorities for Gosport include Healthy Weights, Cardiovascular Disease, Smokefree and Live Longer Better. We are constantly tailoring our work to meet needs and ensure our work is relevant and impactful.
