During the financial year, the company delivered a diverse programme of cultural, educational and social initiatives designed to support newly arrived Hong Kongers in Scotland and to foster stronger ties with the local Scottish community. Summary of Activities and Community Benefits Cultural & Social Gatherings -Christmas Gathering (Dec 2023) – 89 participants: Introduced Scottish festive food and games to Hong Kongers; provided a supportive environment for newcomers to connect and share experiences. -Lunar New Year Celebration (Feb 2024) – 80 participants: Offered traditional Fai Chun writing, Kung Fu shows, mahjong, and food areas; promoted intercultural exchange between Hong Kong and Scottish communities. -Bi-monthly “Wee Union Hong Kong Gathering” (Apr 2024) – 80 participants: Continued social networking, emotional support, and practical advice sessions to help Hong Kongers settle in Scotland. Educational Programmes -Mini-lecture “Should Buy or Should Rent” (Mar 2024) – 19 participants: Delivered in Cantonese and English by housing professionals; covered renting vs. buying, market insights, and legal precautions; distributed leaflets and hosted Q&A sessions. -Feedback Integration: Used attendee suggestions to plan future seminars on house-hunting skills, DIY, property maintenance, and other practical topics. Cultural Festivals & Workshops -“Return of the Hong Kong Market 2024” (Apr 2024) – over 10,000 of attendees over two days: Two-day festival at Barras Market featuring street food, handicrafts, exhibitions, Lion Dance, Cantonese opera, and Kung Fu shows. Promoted Hong Kong heritage to Scottish audiences and gave small businesses a platform to develop and connect with local customers. Attracted local media attention and strengthened economic and multicultural ties. -Rice Dumpling DIY Workshop (Dragon Boat Festival, May 2024) – 30 participants: Taught traditional food preparation, engaging both Hong Kongers and Scottish residents in cultural heritage. Community Impact -Provided safe, welcoming spaces for new arrivals to combat isolation and cultural barriers. -Encouraged mental health and family participation through festive, child-friendly activities. -Enhanced cultural exchange by introducing Hong Kong traditions to Scots and Scottish customs to Hong Kongers. -Supported economic participation by giving entrepreneurs, volunteers, and performers paid or volunteer opportunities. -Acted as a hub for sharing information on housing, jobs, legal issues, and Scottish community resources, especially for non-English speakers.
