The directors present their report with the financial statements of the company for the period ended 31 December 2024

Principal activities of the company

During the financial year ending 31 December 2024, the principal activity of Sustainable Artist was to support the development, visibility, and professional growth of emerging and underrepresented artists across the UK, particularly in the Yorkshire region. The company delivered a range of services including workshops and training on portfolio development, branding, and sustainable practices in art. It also provided employment support, guidance on fair pay, and referrals to creative institutions. Exhibition opportunities and charitable events, such as a fundraising art auction in partnership with Refuge, helped raise the profile of artists and promoted social causes. As a designated Arts Council Support Worker, the company also supported neurodivergent artists in accessing grant funding. These activities were all aligned with the company's mission to empower creatives, increase accessibility within the arts, and use artistic practice as a tool for economic and social inclusion.

Political and charitable donations

A charitable contribution of £275 was made to Refuge, through a charity art auction held in partnership with Refuge, the UK’s largest domestic abuse charity. Proceeds from the event supported Refuge’s work with survivors of domestic violence. This initiative aligned with the company’s mission to use art as a vehicle for social good and community support.

Company policy on disabled employees

Sustainable Artist is committed to equality, diversity, and inclusion, ensuring that disabled individuals are supported and empowered to contribute meaningfully to the organisation’s activities. The company provides reasonable adjustments to accommodate individual needs in both employment and engagement. For example, disabled team members with mobility challenges are permitted to run workshops virtually, ensuring equal access to work opportunities without barriers. As an Arts Council Support Worker, the company has also provided tailored support to neurodivergent artists in applying for grant funding. We are committed to fostering an inclusive environment where disabled artists and employees are valued, respected, and supported in their professional development. This policy is in line with the Equality Act 2010 and reflects our broader mission to increase accessibility and inclusion within the creative sector.

Company activities and impact

During the 2023–2024 financial year, Sustainable Artist empowered the creative community through training, employment support, and inclusive programming. We were designated as an Arts Council Support Worker and provided tailored guidance to neurodivergent artists applying for Arts Council grants, helping them access vital funding. We delivered workshops on portfolio development, branding, and sustainable practices, and supported artists in securing freelance and part-time opportunities. In June 2024, we hosted a charity art auction in partnership with Refuge, raising funds for domestic abuse survivors while promoting socially engaged art. Commissioned by Unity Enterprise Centre, we also delivered website development training for creative entrepreneurs to enhance their digital presence. Our referral network connected emerging artists to institutions like the Scotts Creative Art Foundation, and our mailing list, which reaches thousands of Yorkshire-based artists, circulated high-quality opportunities. These activities have strengthened artists' economic resilience and championed accessibility and equity within the creative sector.

Consultation with stakeholders

As a community-focused organisation, Sustainable Artist regularly engages with stakeholders who benefit from our services. A key stakeholder is the Scotts Creative Art Foundation, an arts institution subscribed to our mailing list. They share employment and funding opportunities from Sustainable Artist with their network of over 6,000 creatives across Yorkshire, extending our impact. We consulted directly with Dr Sue Armstrong, the Foundation’s Founder, Trustee, and Artistic Director, who reviewed our “How to Make Money as an Artist” course. Dr Armstrong noted: “The content was informative and comprehensive, providing emerging artists with a mine of useful information focused on business and career development.” She also praised the online course as “an extremely valuable resource offered at a price that makes it accessible for all.” Her feedback has been instrumental in shaping how we deliver our training and ensure it meets the needs of underrepresented and emerging artists across the region.
