During the financial year ended 31 January 2025, Comfort Companions CIC continued to pursue its community purpose of reducing loneliness and supporting unpaid carers of people living with dementia. The company focused on developing a voice-based digital companion designed to provide conversation, reassurance and practical support for older adults who are socially isolated or digitally excluded. Activities during the year included design and development of the Comfort Companions AI platform in preparation for the 2025-26 Time4You pilot with Age UK South Gloucestershire. The company also worked with community groups and researchers to refine the system’s accessibility and tone for older users. The company generated trading income of £13,500 through partnership work with Microsoft and was additionally supported by a family loan and a small director capital contribution. All expenditure was applied to research, development and community engagement. No directors were paid and no dividends were declared.
The company consulted a range of stakeholders during the year including older adults, unpaid carers, Age UK South Gloucestershire staff and volunteers, and community dementia support groups. Consultation took place through co-design workshops, informal feedback sessions and early feasibility testing of the Comfort Companions platform. Participants provided feedback on conversational tone, accessibility and user experience. In response, the company refined its voice interaction design to ensure a calm, reassuring communication style and simplified user setup for digitally excluded older people.
