The company provides consultancy services to arts and cultural sector organisations and individuals working in cultural and creative environments in the UK. The consultancy opened for business in December 2023. During the financial year 2023/2024 the consultancy’s activities have benefited the arts and cultural sector community in the following ways: Contributing to Arts Council England regional strategic plans affecting theatre makers from marginalised communities; providing support to individual creative practitioners from minoritised groups who are experiencing challenges affecting their ability to work; helping organisations to build resilience in periods of social unrest. This has helped individuals and businesses to remain viable during a challenging year for the cultural sector.
The stakeholders are – freelancers working in arts and culture, and arts and culture businesses. Consultation is frequent and regular: freelancers take part in small group research I successfully held consultations with arts leaders whose staff and audiences had been affected by the riots of summer 2024, and who had (since 2024) reported to me instances of racism that had affected their creative practice. I held in-depth interviews (1 hour or longer) with 11 ethnically diverse arts leaders based in London (7 theatre, 1 opera, 2 music, 4 interdisciplinary), as well as additional leaders based in the Midlands, the North and Southwest England (6). I supplemented these interviews with extensive reading – of published articles relating to the riots and to perceptions regarding inclusion and EDI strategies in the UK and the US, including published articles from EDI professionals within my network. Dialogue with the wider arts and cultural sector was conducted through collaboration and engagement with 3 (white-led, or predominantly white membership) nation-wide cultural networks and organisations, representing multiple creative disciplines (and representing thousands of freelancers and arts organisations nation-wide. Conversations included Creative UK, What Next? Clore Fellowship groups and Freelancers Make Theatre Work. What was successful in this project delivery was the exploration (with those most affected by racism) of solutions and strategies to mitigate harm and inequity, and the interrogation of practice and strategies for care of those affected by racism. What was also successful was the collective exploration of barriers and challenges to anti-racist and Islamophobic action, the common consensus for collective allyship and articulation of a desire for a sector-wide plan.An additional positive outcome of this project was the building of a data set of ethnically diverse people working in the creative and cultural sector. My focus was on building a data set of those employed in creative businesses (as opposed to creatives or creative leaders).
