Overview of Funding and Project Timeline In the February 2024 - January 2025 period, a National Lottery Heritage Fund award (Feb 2024) enabled us to fully develop Hidden Heritages: One School, Many Voices - from proposal to active delivery planning. The new project builds upon the previous project Hidden Heritages Cambridgeshire. In the same period, we completed project recruitment of the Project Manager, Project Co-ordinator and Trainers, established an Advisory Group, and began planning intensive training in oral history for schools, as well as planned a suite of training videos. Key Activities (Feb 2024 - Jan 2025) - Assembled an Advisory Group, which includes Cambridgeshire heritage experts, previous project participants, educators, and South Asian community members, to guide project design, ethics, and community relevance. - Planned a bespoke suite of training videos in oral history. - Began planning workshops for Year 8 to Year 9 students at Sawston Village College. Benefits to the Community Benefits to the community will emerge, as the project develops and we complete our activity plan in the next reporting period. In brief, these are expected along the following trajectory: a. Youth Empowerment and Skill building - Students gain a range of skills, including research, interviewing, ethical consent, communications skills. - Participation encourages a sense of agency and confidence, positioning students as emerging historians and cultural interpreters in their communities. b. Heritage Preservation and Visibility - The outputs - interview recordings - will preserve South Asian migration narratives in Cambridgeshire. - Materials will be deposited with Cambridgeshire Archives and the Museum of Cambridge will host an exhibition, ensuring long-term preservation and greater public access. c. Enhanced Community Cohesion - Developing stories through interactions across generations and cultures fosters deeper understanding and empathy within Cambridgeshire's diverse communities. - Students and community members connect through shared storytelling, strengthening intergenerational bonds.
The company’s stakeholders include project participants, the National Lottery Heritage Fund (NLHF), the Museum of Cambridge, Cambridgeshire Archives, the local South Asian community, and teachers and students at Sawston Village College. In preparation for Hidden Heritages in Schools, during the bid development stage we consulted closely with many of these stakeholders, including the National Lottery Heritage Fund (NLHF), the Museum of Cambridge, Cambridgeshire Archives and Sawston Village College. Following the award from the NLHF, we formed an Advisory Group comprising heritage professionals, educators, and community members to guide project design and delivery. Through meetings and regular email communications, we solicited feedback on training content and structure, project design and delivery. As a result, we incorporated stakeholder suggestions into our funding proposal - particularly in designing age-appropriate oral history workshops and those which fit with the school's and community needs. This collaborative approach strengthened our bid and guided the project’s governance and delivery strategy.
